Job description

2027 SUMMER LAW CLERK ANNOUNCEMENT

Job Title: 2027 Summer Law Clerk

The Environmental Integrity Project is accepting applications for Summer 2027 law clerks to join our team. This position can be either remote or in-person at EIP’s Washington, D.C. office.

EIP is a nonprofit organization established in March of 2002 by former EPA enforcement attorneys to advocate for more effective enforcement of environmental laws. EIP’s mission is to protect public health and our natural resources by holding polluters and government agencies accountable under the law, advocating for tough but fair environmental standards, and empowering communities fighting for clean air and clean water.

The law clerks’ duties will include legal research and writing related to environmental, administrative, and information-collecting statutes and regulations, review of pollution permits and data, and other work to support public comments, litigation, and issue-focused reports.

Qualifications: Currently enrolled law students are eligible to apply. Applications from current 1L and 2L students (i.e. students who are not graduating before December

2027) will be considered. Candidates should have completed at least one year of law school and have a strong interest in environmental advocacy.

This role is open to candidates in states where EIP is registered as an employer. Right now, we are actively hiring in the following states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, D.C., Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Because of business registration requirements, we may prioritize candidates in those locations—but we’d still love to hear from all qualified applicants. If you are applying, please let us know your state of residence in your cover letter.

The ideal candidate will have a background in or completed coursework on environmental law and administrative law, and a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection or non-profit advocacy. Previous experience with the Clean Air Act or Clean Water Act, developing or litigating cases, commenting on or challenging permits or rules, policy analysis, media outreach, or coalition building would also be helpful. Candidates must demonstrate strong writing and analytical skills and should be able to handle multiple tasks at once and work well with others.

Compensation: Academic credit and/or an hourly wage of $23 per hour. EIP can provide both credit and an hourly wage in the event that the candidate’s law school's policies expressly permit students to receive academic credit for paid externships.

Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week). This position can be either remote or in-person.

To Apply: Candidates should submit the following materials using this form: https://tinyurl.com/LawClerkSummer2027 .

·         Cover letter

·         Resume

·         Legal writing sample

·         Law school transcript; and

·         Contact information for three references

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
