How to Apply for Vice President of Operations

at The Good Food Institute

🏢 About The Good Food Institute

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a leading nonprofit driving the global shift toward sustainable, plant-based alternatives to animal products. With a mission to build a better food system, GFI combines scientific research, policy advocacy, and corporate engagement to create a world where alternative proteins are no longer alternatives. Working here means joining a passionate, mission-driven team at the forefront of food innovation.

About This Role

As VP of Operations, you will lead GFI's Collaborative Assistance Team (CAT) — overseeing Finance, IT, Operations, and People Operations across the U.S. entity and international affiliates. This role is critical for ensuring the operational backbone supports GFI's rapid growth and global impact, while fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture. You will work directly with the CEO and Leadership Team to shape strategy and manage risk.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a check-in with the CAT leads (Finance, IT, Ops, People) to review priorities and roadblocks, followed by a strategy session with the CEO on a new international expansion. After lunch, you could dive into a policy review for a new internal control, then end the day with a virtual coffee chat with a remote team member in Europe to ensure alignment and inclusion.

🎯 Who The Good Food Institute Is Looking For

  • A seasoned leader with 10+ years of experience in at least two of the CAT areas (Finance, IT, Operations, People Operations), preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multi-entity, international structures and navigating complex stakeholder dynamics across time zones and cultures.
  • A track record of building inclusive teams and fostering a culture of belonging, with concrete examples of DEI initiatives implemented.
  • Strategic thinker who can translate operational needs into scalable systems, yet comfortable diving into details such as policy design and internal controls.

📝 Tips for Applying to The Good Food Institute

1

Tailor your resume to highlight cross-functional leadership across CAT areas — use specific metrics (e.g., budget size, team headcount, efficiency gains).

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your experience with international or multi-entity structures to GFI's global affiliate model.

3

Showcase your commitment to GFI's mission by mentioning any personal or professional involvement with plant-based foods, sustainability, or alternative proteins.

4

Prepare a brief (1-page) 'operational vision' document outlining how you would approach integrating the four CAT functions — attach it to your application.

5

Research GFI's recent annual report and mention specific challenges or opportunities you see in their operations (e.g., scaling remote teams, affiliate coordination).

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your ability to lead across multiple operational domains (Finance, IT, Ops, People) with concrete examples of past success.', "Experience with international or multi-entity organizations and how you've harmonized policies and systems.", "Your passion for GFI's mission and understanding of the alternative protein landscape.", 'Your approach to building inclusive, high-performing teams in a remote-first environment.']

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too generic about nonprofit operations — GFI needs specific examples of multi-entity management and cross-functional leadership.
  • Overlooking the remote-first, global nature of the role — don't assume a centralized HQ model.
  • Failing to demonstrate genuine passion for the mission — GFI is mission-driven, and candidates should reflect that.
