How to Apply for Staff/Principal Product Designer

at Amber Electric

๐Ÿข About Amber Electric

Amber Electric is a pioneering Australian energy company that leverages dynamic pricing and smart technology to empower consumers to save money and profit from green energy. With a mission to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, Amber offers a unique opportunity to design products that directly impact hundreds of thousands of users' energy literacy and financial savings.

About This Role

As a Staff/Principal Product Designer, you'll tackle the highest-priority product challenges, shaping design direction for new horizon projects used by hundreds of thousands worldwide. You'll work across product streams to define problem framing, product direction, and experience principles, while mentoring designers and raising the bar for design craft.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a cross-functional standup with PMs and engineers to align on discovery findings, followed by deep work on wireframes or prototypes for a new energy-saving feature. Afternoon could involve a design critique session with other designers, then mentoring a junior designer on interaction patterns, ending with a strategic discussion with the VP of Product on the next quarter's roadmap.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Amber Electric Is Looking For

  • A seasoned designer with well over 10 years of experience, including at least 3 years at Staff or Principal level, who thrives on ambiguous, messy problem spaces.
  • Proven track record of designing scalable mobile and web experiences across multiple platforms and markets, with a strong portfolio demonstrating impact.
  • Exceptional visual and interaction craft, with the ability to bring order to complexity while maintaining quality and humanity in the user experience.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with PMs, engineers, and execs, and skilled at mentoring designers without formal management responsibilities.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Amber Electric

1

Highlight specific examples where you've led design for ambiguous, high-impact projects, especially in energy, fintech, or sustainability sectors.

2

Showcase your ability to design for both mobile and web at scale, with metrics or user research evidence of improved outcomes.

3

Tailor your portfolio to include case studies that demonstrate how you brought order to messy problem spaces and influenced product strategy.

4

Mention any experience with dynamic pricing, energy markets, or smart home technology, even if tangential, to show domain interest.

5

Address how you've mentored other designers and raised design standards through critique and shared practices, without formal management.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your passion for sustainability and renewable energy, and how your design skills can help consumers save and profit from green energy.', 'Describe a specific instance where you tackled a complex, ambiguous problem and delivered a scalable, human-centered solution.', 'Highlight your experience working cross-functionally with product and engineering leaders to align on strategic decisions.', "Show how you've elevated design craft in previous roles through mentoring, critique, and setting shared standards."]
