How to Apply for Southeast Iowa Canvass Director
at Food & Water Watch
🏢 About Food & Water Watch
Food & Water Watch is a national grassroots organization that fights for safe food, clean water, and a livable climate. Unlike many advocacy groups, we combine research, lobbying, and direct action with a strong field program that mobilizes communities door-to-door. If you want to work where your efforts directly translate into political power for progressive change, this is the place.
About This Role
As Southeast Iowa Canvass Director, you'll build and lead a team of canvassers to have thousands of conversations with Iowans about critical food and water issues. Your work will directly impact elections and policy campaigns by turning public concern into action. This role is hands-on—you'll recruit, train, and manage staff while also hitting the doors yourself to ensure quality and connection.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day starts with a team huddle to review goals and turf assignments, then you might drive canvassers to their drop-off points. You'll spend part of the day knocking doors yourself to model best practices, then return to the office to analyze VAN data, adjust territory, and handle payroll. Evenings often involve debriefing with the team and planning the next day's logistics.

In your resume, quantify your canvassing experience: number of doors knocked, conversations had, team size managed, and any metrics like conversion rates or volunteer sign-ups.
For the cover letter, mention specific Food & Water Watch campaigns you admire (e.g., the fight against factory farms or water privatization) and how your skills apply to Iowa's context.
Highlight any experience with VAN or similar tools in detail—include the specific features you used (turf cutting, data entry, reporting) and how you used data to improve performance.
Show that you understand rural organizing: mention any experience working in small towns or agricultural communities, and how you adapt messaging for conservative or mixed audiences.
Prepare a short example of how you've handled a difficult canvasser performance issue or scheduling conflict, as this role requires strong people management.
