How to Apply for Senior Technical Program Manager (Remote, US)

at Renew Home

๐Ÿข About Renew Home

Everyday Electric (formerly Renew Home) is building the largest residential virtual power plant (VPP) in North America, partnering with major brands to help households save energy and money while supporting grid stability. Working here means directly contributing to the clean energy transition at scale, with a mission-driven team focused on efficiency, savings, and comfort for customers. The company is remote-first and values independence, impact, and cross-functional collaboration.

About This Role

As a Senior Technical Program Manager, you will own the planning, execution, and operational health of complex programs across the VPP platform and consumer energy products. This is not a coordination roleโ€”you are expected to build and own execution frameworks, drive tradeoff decisions, and communicate risks effectively to leadership. You will report to the Director of TPM and operate with significant autonomy to shape how programs are delivered.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start your day with a sync with engineering leads to unblock a critical API integration, then review program dashboards to assess risks and update stakeholders. Later, you could facilitate a cross-functional meeting to align product, hardware, and partnerships teams on a launch timeline, and end by drafting a decision memo for leadership on a key tradeoff. Expect frequent context-switching and high autonomy.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Renew Home Is Looking For

  • 5+ years of technical program management experience in fast-paced, cross-functional environments, ideally in energy, IoT, or consumer hardware/software.
  • Proven ability to design and implement program management frameworks (e.g., OKRs, roadmaps, risk registers) that scale across multiple teams.
  • Strong technical acumen to understand VPP platform architecture, APIs, and data flows, and to engage deeply with engineering teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills to articulate tradeoffs, risks, and status to executives and external partners, driving alignment and decisions.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Renew Home

1

Highlight specific examples of programs you've owned end-to-end, including how you structured them, measured success, and navigated tradeoffsโ€”use metrics where possible.

2

Demonstrate familiarity with virtual power plants, demand response, or distributed energy resources (DERs) in your resume or cover letter to show domain interest.

3

Emphasize your ability to operate independently and build frameworks from scratch, as this role requires significant autonomy.

4

Reference Everyday Electric's mission and recent milestones (e.g., partnerships, platform growth) to show you've researched the company beyond the job description.

5

Use the cover letter to explain why you're excited about residential energy and how your technical program management skills translate to scaling a VPP platform.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your experience building and owning program management frameworks that improved execution reliability across cross-functional teams.', 'A specific example of how you communicated a complex tradeoff or risk to leadership and drove a decision that impacted program success.', "Your technical understanding of distributed systems, APIs, or energy platforms, and how you've partnered with engineering teams to deliver complex products.", "Why you're passionate about Everyday Electric's mission to create the largest residential virtual power plant and how you can contribute to its growth."]

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Explore Everyday Electric's website, especially their VPP platform, partnerships, and case studies to understand their technology and market position.
  • โ†’ Read recent news or press releases about virtual power plants, demand response, and residential energy trends to contextualize the company's work.
  • โ†’ Research the backgrounds of the leadership team, particularly the Director of TPM and engineering leaders, to understand their priorities and working style.
  • โ†’ Look into competitors in the VPP space (e.g., OhmConnect, Sunrun) to identify differentiators and challenges Everyday Electric might face.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you structure a program to launch a new VPP feature across hardware, software, and utility partners?
2 Describe a time you had to make a tradeoff between scope, timeline, and resources. How did you communicate it and what was the outcome?
3 How do you ensure operational health and reliability of a platform that depends on real-time data from thousands of residential devices?
4 Tell us about a program that failed or went off track. What did you learn and how did you adjust your framework?
5 How would you align engineering, product, and business teams on a shared roadmap for a consumer energy product with regulatory constraints?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on coordination skills rather than demonstrating ownership of program frameworks and strategic decision-making.
  • Ignoring the technical depth requiredโ€”avoid vague descriptions of working with engineering teams without concrete examples of technical programs you've managed.
  • Submitting a generic cover letter that doesn't mention Everyday Electric, VPPs, or the residential energy domain, which signals lack of genuine interest.
