How to Apply for Senior Software Engineer, Data Architecture
at Outschool.org
🏢 About Outschool.org
Outschool.org is a mission-driven nonprofit (spun out of Outschool) that builds family navigation tools to help parents access and pay for education, currently operating state-contracted programs in Arkansas, South Carolina, and Texas. Unlike typical edtech companies, they work directly with public funds and government systems, aiming to become nationwide infrastructure for Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) and other direct-to-family funding models. This is a chance to apply deep data engineering skills to a social impact problem with real scale and policy relevance.
About This Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, Data Architecture, you'll own PostgreSQL schema design, complex data modeling, and relational database architecture for backend tools that serve families, education providers, and state agencies. You'll lead backend integrations across highly configurable, state-specific workflows, ensuring interoperability with legacy government systems and private infrastructure. This is a contract (6+ months, contract-to-hire) remote role where your architectural decisions directly affect how quickly and reliably families can access educational funds.
💡 A Day in the Life
You might start your day reviewing a new state program's requirements and mapping them to your existing data model, then pair with a backend engineer to refine a schema migration. Later, you'd debug a data sync issue with a legacy government API, document the resolution, and propose a more robust integration pattern. You'd also join a product meeting to discuss how to make the system configurable enough to onboard the next state without custom code.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who Outschool.org Is Looking For
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL schema design, including normalization, indexing strategies, constraints, and query optimization for complex, multi-tenant or highly configurable data models.
- Proven experience building and maintaining backend integrations with legacy government or enterprise systems, handling data exchange formats, validation, and synchronization challenges.
- Comfortable designing for interoperability and configurability—able to model state/program-specific rules without creating brittle, one-off solutions.
- Strong product engineering mindset: you care about how data architecture impacts user experience, system scalability, and the ability to onboard new state contracts quickly.
📝 Tips for Applying to Outschool.org
Highlight specific PostgreSQL projects where you designed schemas for complex, evolving business rules—quantify scale (e.g., number of tables, data volume, query performance improvements).
Emphasize any experience with government, education, or regulated data systems; mention familiarity with ESAs, 529 plans, or public funding workflows if applicable.
Show evidence of leading backend integrations across multiple systems, especially where you had to reconcile legacy constraints with modern APIs.
Tailor your resume to emphasize data architecture and modeling over general full-stack work; this role is not about frontend or generic CRUD apps.
In your cover letter or application, explicitly connect your work to Outschool.org's mission—demonstrate you understand the stakes of building infrastructure for public education funds.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your hands-on experience designing PostgreSQL schemas for highly configurable, multi-tenant systems, with concrete examples of how your architecture enabled scalability or new program onboarding.', 'Your track record of integrating with legacy government or enterprise systems, including how you handled data validation, error recovery, and synchronization.', 'Your ability to balance product velocity with data integrity and long-term maintainability, especially in a contract context where you need to deliver quickly.', "Why you're excited about Outschool.org's specific mission: expanding from a handful of state contracts to nationwide infrastructure for family-directed education funding."]
Generate Cover Letter →🔍 Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- → Read about Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) and other direct-to-family funding programs—understand how they work, who administers them, and what data flows are involved.
- → Explore Outschool.org's current state contracts (Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas) and any public documentation or press releases about their tools and services.
- → Research the technical challenges of interoperability with legacy government systems in education (e.g., state student information systems, payment processors).
- → Look into Outschool.org's parent company, Outschool, and its mission; understand how the nonprofit arm differs and why it was spun out.
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting a generic software engineering resume that doesn't highlight PostgreSQL schema design and complex data modeling—this role is highly specialized.
- Ignoring the contract nature of the role and not addressing your availability for a 6+ month commitment (with potential to hire).
- Failing to demonstrate any interest or experience in education, government, or public-sector data systems—this context is central to the work.
