How to Apply for Senior Product Designer (Customer Success) (f/m/x) - Remote

at refurbed

๐Ÿข About refurbed

refurbed is on a mission to make sustainable tech accessible by selling high-quality refurbished electronics, directly combating e-waste. The company operates a marketplace model that connects customers with professional refurbishers, and they're scaling rapidly across Europe. Working here means you'll have a tangible impact on the environment while designing for a complex, multi-sided platform.

About This Role

As Senior Product Designer for Customer Success, you'll own the post-purchase experienceโ€”from order tracking to returns and AI-powered customer support. Your work will directly improve customer satisfaction and retention while reducing friction in a high-stakes part of the user journey. You'll collaborate with engineers, product managers, and operations to balance user needs with the realities of third-party refurbishers.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a standup with your squad to align on the week's goals. Then you'll dive into user research insights from support tickets and chat logs, sketch out flows for a new AI-driven return assistant, and later sync with the operations team to understand refurbisher constraints. After lunch, you'll refine prototypes based on feedback and run a quick usability test, then wrap up by tweaking a design system component for consistency across the post-purchase journey.

๐ŸŽฏ Who refurbed Is Looking For

  • A designer with 5+ years of experience who has owned end-to-end product experiences, especially in post-purchase or support flows.
  • Someone who thrives in ambiguity and can start with small experiments to validate hypotheses before scaling.
  • A power user of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, or design-specific AI) who integrates them into their daily workflow to enhance speed and creativity.
  • Experienced in designing across systems or with external partners, ensuring coherence even when you don't control every touchpoint.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to refurbed

1

In your portfolio, highlight a project where you improved a post-purchase or support experienceโ€”show metrics like reduced support tickets or increased NPS.

2

Mention specific AI tools you use (e.g., using AI for user research synthesis, wireframing, or copywriting) and how they've impacted your work.

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize experience with complex ecosystems or multi-stakeholder products (e.g., marketplace, platform).

4

Write a short case study on how you'd approach improving refurbed's return flow, referencing their refurbisher network constraints.

5

Include a link to your portfolio that is easy to navigate and clearly shows your role in each project.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for sustainability and how refurbed's mission resonates with you personally.", 'Concrete examples of designing for ambiguous, complex systems (e.g., a marketplace or support platform).', 'How you leverage AI to enhance your design process, with specific examples.', 'Your ability to balance user needs with business and partner constraints, showing empathy for all stakeholders.']

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Read refurbed's blog and sustainability reports to understand their impact and brand voice.
  • โ†’ Try ordering from refurbed (or similar refurbished marketplaces) to experience the post-purchase flow firsthand.
  • โ†’ Study their current customer support experienceโ€”check their help center, chat, and return policy.
  • โ†’ Look at reviews on Trustpilot or other sites to identify common customer pain points.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through a time you improved a customer support or post-purchase experience. What metrics did you move?
2 How would you design an AI-augmented support chat that feels human and helpful, not robotic?
3 Describe a project where you had to work with external partners or systems you didn't control. How did you ensure a coherent user experience?
4 How do you decide which problems to solve when the space is ambiguous? Give an example.
5 How do you use AI in your design workflow currently? What tools and for what tasks?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic portfolioโ€”make sure it includes relevant work (post-purchase, support, or platform design).
  • Avoid ignoring the AI requirement; failing to mention how you use AI will make you seem out of touch.
  • Don't focus only on visual design; this role is about UX strategy and systems thinking, not just pixel-perfect mockups.
