How to apply for Senior Originator - Public Power

Mainspring Energy

About Mainspring Energy

Mainspring Energy is a cleantech manufacturer behind the Linear Generator, a fuel-flexible, low-emissions power solution that has been shipping commercially since 2020 and is deployed across Fortune 500 companies, data centers, and utilities. Partnered with industry giants like AEP, NextEra Energy Resources, and Schneider Electric, Mainspring offers a rare chance to scale a breakthrough energy technology with real commercial traction. The company's values—Pragmatic Optimism, Excellence without Ego, and Proactive Collaboration—signal a culture that rewards driven, team-oriented problem solvers.

About the role

As a Senior Originator - Public Power, you will own the commercial strategy and transaction execution for Municipalities, Electric Cooperatives, and IOUs, turning your existing utility relationships into high-value deals for Mainspring's Linear Generators. This is a hunter role: you'll pitch at the executive level, navigate complex procurement cycles, and drive deals from first handshake to financial close. Your success directly expands Mainspring's footprint in the public power segment and accelerates the transition to a net-zero grid.

A typical day

You'll start your day with a pipeline review call, then jump on a virtual pitch to a municipal utility's procurement team. Afterward, you'll debrief with Mainspring's engineering and legal teams to refine a proposal, and end the day with a networking call to a co-op executive you've been cultivating. Expect frequent travel to utility headquarters and industry conferences to build relationships and close deals.

Who Mainspring Energy is looking for

  • Proven originator with a deep, active rolodex across public power—municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, and IOUs—and a track record of closing complex, high-value energy transactions.
  • Experience selling capital-intensive energy solutions (e.g., generation equipment, PPAs, distributed energy resources) to utility decision-makers, with fluency in utility procurement, regulatory, and financing processes.
  • High-energy, commercially savvy dealmaker who thrives in a remote, fast-paced environment and can independently drive executive-level conversations.
  • Strong technical aptitude to articulate the value of fuel-flexible linear generation, and a collaborative mindset aligned with Mainspring's values of Excellence without Ego and Proactive Collaboration.

Tips for this application

  • Lead with your rolodex: in your resume and outreach, quantify the depth of your public power network—name specific utilities or co-ops you've worked with and deals you've closed.
  • Tailor your resume to highlight origination and transaction execution, not just account management; use terms like 'greenfield origination,' 'financial close,' and 'executive relationship building.'
  • Reference Mainspring's specific partners (AEP, NextEra, Schneider Electric) and explain how your experience complements those channels in the public power space.
  • Since the role is remote, demonstrate your ability to self-manage and travel as needed; mention your home base and willingness to be on the road for utility meetings.
  • Avoid generic cover letters: instead, draft a short 'deal sheet' or addendum summarizing 2-3 relevant transactions you originated, including utility counterparties and outcomes.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your existing public power relationships and how you can immediately open doors at target utilities.', 'A concrete example of a complex deal you originated from cold outreach to financial close, highlighting your persistence and commercial creativity.', "Why Mainspring's Linear Generator is uniquely positioned to solve public power pain points (e.g., resiliency, emissions, fuel flexibility) and how you'd pitch it.", "Your alignment with Mainspring's core values, especially Pragmatic Optimism and Proactive Collaboration, with a brief anecdote."]

Research before applying

  • Study Mainspring's Linear Generator technology—its fuel flexibility, emissions profile, and use cases—to speak credibly about its advantages over alternatives.
  • Research Mainspring's existing public power deployments and partnerships (e.g., with AEP, NextEra) to understand their go-to-market strategy and identify gaps you could fill.
  • Understand the regulatory and procurement landscape for municipal utilities and electric cooperatives, including common RFP processes and decision-making structures.
  • Review recent news about Mainspring, such as funding rounds, new deployments, or executive hires, to tailor your outreach and interview answers.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • Walk us through your rolodex: which public power entities do you know, and how would you approach them for Mainspring?
  • Describe a time you navigated a lengthy utility procurement process and won. What was your strategy?
  • How would you articulate the value proposition of Mainspring's Linear Generator to a municipal utility board focused on cost and reliability?
  • Tell us about a deal that stalled or fell apart—what did you learn, and how did you adapt?
  • How do you collaborate with internal engineering, legal, and finance teams to structure complex transactions?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Being vague about your network: claiming to have 'many utility contacts' without naming specific entities or roles will undermine your credibility.
  • Focusing only on relationship management rather than deal execution: this role requires closing transactions, so emphasize your ability to drive revenue.
  • Ignoring the remote aspect: failing to address how you'll stay connected and productive without an office, or showing reluctance to travel, could disqualify you.

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
