How to Apply for Senior Organizer or Organizing Manager

at Detention Watch Network

🏢 About Detention Watch Network

Detention Watch Network (DWN) is a national coalition founded in 1997 that works to abolish immigration detention in the U.S. through collective advocacy, grassroots organizing, and strategic communications. As a small but growing team, DWN offers the chance to work at the intersection of racial equity, immigrant justice, and grassroots power-building. The remote-first culture and 18-month term with potential extension make it ideal for organizers seeking a focused, high-impact role.

About This Role

The Senior Organizer or Organizing Manager will drive DWN’s campaign strategies by supporting members and staff in developing and implementing statewide, regional, and national campaigns to challenge detention. This role involves public education, training, outreach, ally building, and coordinating key membership calls and events. Reporting to the Senior Campaign Manager, you’ll be a critical bridge between local efforts and national abolition goals.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might include a morning check-in with the Senior Campaign Manager, followed by a strategy call with member organizations in the Northeast to plan a state-level advocacy day. In the afternoon, you might draft a training curriculum for an upcoming webinar, then join a coalition call to coordinate messaging. You’ll balance independent remote work with frequent virtual collaboration and occasional travel to member events or actions.

🎯 Who Detention Watch Network Is Looking For

  • Proven experience in grassroots organizing or campaign management, ideally within immigrant rights, racial justice, or abolition movements.
  • Strong coalition-building skills, with the ability to work across diverse member organizations and stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and executing campaign strategies at local, state, or national levels, including public education and training.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with comfort coordinating calls, events, and member engagement in a remote setting.
  • Deep commitment to abolition, racial equity, and DWN’s mission, with a willingness to travel as needed.

📝 Tips for Applying to Detention Watch Network

1

Highlight specific campaigns you’ve organized that relate to immigration detention, abolition, or immigrant justice—quantify outcomes where possible.

2

Demonstrate experience working with coalitions or networks, not just individual organizations, since DWN is a national coalition.

3

Emphasize your ability to work remotely and independently while staying connected to a small, collaborative team.

4

Address your familiarity with the Northeastern U.S. region, as DWN prefers candidates based there and may prioritize regional knowledge.

5

Mention any experience with training, facilitation, or public education, as these are key responsibilities.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
