How to Apply for Senior Manager, Payroll Operations & Accounting

at Partners for Rural Impact

๐Ÿข About Partners for Rural Impact

Partners for Rural Impact (PRI) is a mission-driven nonprofit that has spent over 30 years partnering with rural communities, starting in Appalachian Kentucky, to ensure demographics don't determine destiny. They work across the country to build local partnerships that put young people on a path to economic mobility. This is a chance to apply your payroll expertise in a purpose-driven environment where your work directly supports rural communities and the employees who serve them.

About This Role

As the Senior Manager, Payroll Operations & Accounting, you will own the full-cycle payroll function for a multi-state, remote workforce, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This hands-on leadership role requires deep expertise in payroll accounting, multi-state taxation, system configuration, and benefits/retirement deductions. You'll also drive continuous improvement, internal controls, and audit readiness while keeping the employee experience at the forefront.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You'll start your day reviewing payroll reports and resolving any discrepancies from the latest processing cycle. Mid-morning, you might meet with the HR team to discuss benefits deductions or system updates, then dive into reconciliations and journal entries. In the afternoon, you could be researching a new state tax requirement or leading a project to automate a manual payroll process, all while ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Partners for Rural Impact Is Looking For

  • 7+ years of progressive payroll operations experience, including multi-state payroll processing and taxation, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of payroll accounting (journal entries, reconciliations, PEBT) and experience with payroll system configuration (e.g., ADP, Paylocity, UKG, or similar).
  • Demonstrated expertise in compliance with FLSA, IRS regulations, state/local tax laws, and benefits/retirement plan deductions (e.g., 401(k), 403(b)).
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven sector experience is a plus, along with a commitment to serving rural communities and a continuous improvement mindset.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Partners for Rural Impact

1

Highlight specific multi-state payroll experience in your resumeโ€”quantify the number of states, employee count, and payroll volume you've managed.

2

Emphasize any payroll system implementations or optimizations you've led, as PRI likely seeks someone to improve processes and system configuration.

3

Showcase your knowledge of payroll accounting and PEBT by including examples of journal entries, reconciliations, and audit support you've performed.

4

Connect your work to PRI's mission: explain why rural economic mobility and supporting a remote workforce resonates with you.

5

If you have nonprofit or grant-funded payroll experience, mention itโ€”PRI may have unique funding and compliance requirements.
