How to Apply for Senior Environmental Specialist
at NextEra Energy
🏢 About NextEra Energy
NextEra Energy Resources is the world's largest generator of renewable energy from wind and solar, and a leader in battery storage, making it a powerhouse in the clean energy transition. Working here means contributing directly to projects that shape the future of sustainable power, with a focus on innovation and large-scale impact. The company's commitment to tailored energy solutions and community growth makes it an exciting place for environmental professionals passionate about renewable development.
About This Role
As a Senior Environmental Specialist in the Environmental Licensing & Permitting Section, you'll support early-stage project development by assessing environmental constraints, evaluating risks, and initiating permitting and studies for wind, solar, storage, hydrogen, hydro, and transmission projects. You'll advise multidisciplinary teams on site selection and permitting strategies, directly influencing where and how renewable projects get built. This remote role, based in the western U.S., offers the chance to shape the environmental compliance of next-generation energy infrastructure.
💡 A Day in the Life
You might start your day reviewing environmental reports and GIS data to assess potential project sites, followed by a call with the development team to discuss permitting strategies for a new solar project. In the afternoon, you could be drafting a permit application, coordinating with consultants, or participating in a strategy meeting to evaluate risks for a transmission line. The role is dynamic, balancing independent analysis with collaborative problem-solving to advance renewable projects.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who NextEra Energy Is Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in environmental permitting, licensing, or compliance, preferably in renewable energy, transmission, or utility-scale projects.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, ESA, NHPA, CWA) and permitting processes in the western U.S.
- Proven ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, including developers, engineers, and legal, to identify environmental constraints and develop permitting strategies.
- Experience conducting environmental site assessments, managing consultants, and preparing permit applications for energy projects.
- Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work independently from a home office and travel to project sites as needed.
📝 Tips for Applying to NextEra Energy
Highlight your experience with early-stage project development and site prospecting, specifically mentioning how you've helped identify environmental constraints and permitting pathways for renewable energy projects.
Tailor your resume to emphasize projects in the western U.S. (CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, ID, UT, MT, NM, CO) and list specific permits you've secured (e.g., BLM, USFWS, state-level permits).
Use keywords from the job description such as 'environmental licensing,' 'permitting,' 'site constraints,' 'risk evaluation,' and 'multidisciplinary teams' to pass applicant tracking systems.
In your cover letter, explicitly state your willingness and ability to work remotely from one of the specified western states, as this is a hard requirement.
Quantify your impact: e.g., 'Managed permitting for 500 MW of solar projects across three states, reducing approval timelines by 20%.'
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
Emphasize your direct experience in permitting renewable energy projects, particularly in the western U.S., and your ability to assess environmental risks and develop strategies. Highlight your collaborative work with development teams and your knowledge of key regulations like NEPA, ESA, and NHPA. Express enthusiasm for NextEra's leadership in renewables and how your skills align with supporting early-stage project development. Mention your remote work setup and readiness to travel to project sites.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying without explicitly stating your location within the required western U.S. states, as this is a strict requirement for the remote home office.
- Focusing only on compliance and post-approval monitoring rather than early-stage permitting and site prospecting, which is the core of this role.
- Using generic language about 'helping the environment' without tying it to specific renewable energy development and NextEra's business objectives.
