How to Apply for Senior Development Officer

at Vision To Learn

๐Ÿข About Vision To Learn

Vision To Learn is the largest school-based vision care provider in the U.S., delivering free vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to children in low-income communities through mobile clinics. Since 2012, they've served over 3 million children across 850+ cities in 14 states and Washington, DC, making a tangible difference in educational outcomes. Working here means joining a mission-driven organization that directly removes barriers to learning for underserved kids.

About This Role

As Senior Development Officer, you'll report to the Chief Growth Officer and lead donor stewardship, communications, and moves management for a portfolio of individual and institutional supporters. You'll design and execute a disciplined, donor-centered strategy to strengthen VTL's fundraising program, ensuring each relationship has a clear plan and compelling engagement. This role is critical to sustaining and scaling VTL's impact, directly enabling more children to receive vision care.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve reviewing donor portfolios and updating the CRM, drafting personalized stewardship reports or impact updates for major donors, and meeting with the Chief Growth Officer to strategize on upcoming solicitations. You might also coordinate with program staff to gather stories and data for donor communications, and conduct virtual check-ins with key supporters to maintain relationships. The pace is dynamic, balancing strategic planning with execution of donor engagement activities.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Vision To Learn Is Looking For

  • 5+ years of progressive fundraising experience in nonprofit development, with a proven track record in donor stewardship and moves management for individual and institutional gifts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling donor communications and proposals tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Experience using CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser's Edge) to track donor interactions, manage portfolios, and analyze data to inform strategy.
  • Highly organized and strategic, capable of managing multiple donor relationships simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a remote work environment.
  • Passion for VTL's mission and a commitment to equity in education and healthcare, with the ability to articulate the impact of vision care on children's lives.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Vision To Learn

1

Highlight specific examples of how you've strengthened donor relationships and increased giving over timeโ€”quantify results where possible (e.g., 'increased donor retention by X%').

2

Research VTL's funding model (private philanthropy plus public funding like Medicaid and school districts) and mention in your application how you can help diversify and grow their donor base.

3

Emphasize your experience with moves management and donor communications, as these are core to the role. Provide concrete examples of crafting donor journeys or stewardship plans.

4

Demonstrate familiarity with the education or healthcare nonprofit sector, or show how your transferable skills can quickly adapt to VTL's context.

5

Since the role is remote, showcase your ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across time zones, perhaps by mentioning experience with remote team tools and practices.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

In your cover letter, focus on: 1) Your proven ability to manage a donor portfolio and implement moves management strategies that lead to increased giving. 2) Your experience in crafting donor communications that resonate and inspire action. 3) Your alignment with VTL's mission and understanding of the unique funding landscape (private and public). 4) Your ability to thrive in a remote, collaborative environment and work strategically with a Chief Growth Officer.

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Explore VTL's website, annual reports, and press releases to understand their growth trajectory, key funders, and recent milestones (e.g., number of children served, expansion into new states).
  • โ†’ Research the landscape of school-based vision care and the challenges low-income children face in accessing vision services, to speak knowledgeably about the issue.
  • โ†’ Look up the Chief Growth Officer and other development team members on LinkedIn to understand their backgrounds and priorities.
  • โ†’ Investigate VTL's funding sources: which foundations, corporations, and public entities support them? This will help you tailor your application to their specific needs.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you approach building a donor stewardship program for a portfolio that includes both individual and institutional supporters?
2 Describe a time you successfully moved a donor through the pipeline, from identification to solicitation to stewardship. What was your strategy?
3 What metrics do you use to measure the effectiveness of donor communications and stewardship efforts?
4 How would you tailor donor communications for different audiences, such as foundations, corporations, and individual donors?
5 Given VTL's mix of private and public funding, how would you integrate public funding sources into your donor strategy, if at all?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic language about 'helping people' without tying it specifically to VTL's mission and the measurable impact of vision care on children's education.
  • Don't focus solely on solicitation; this role emphasizes stewardship and moves management, so overemphasizing cold asks or transactional fundraising could be a red flag.
  • Avoid neglecting to mention remote work experience or ability to work independently, as the role is fully remote and requires self-discipline.
