How to Apply for Senior Associate, Industrial Clusters - Industry Program (Germany)

at RMI

🏢 About RMI

RMI is a global nonprofit founded in 1982 that transforms energy systems to secure a clean, zero-carbon future by 2030. Unlike traditional environmental groups, RMI works directly with businesses, governments, and financiers to implement market-based solutions, making it a unique place for those who want to drive tangible industrial decarbonization. The Climate-Aligned Industries program is at the forefront of heavy industry decarbonization, offering the chance to shape real-world projects in steel, cement, chemicals, and more.

About This Role

As a Senior Associate on the Industrial Clusters team, you will support RMI's European industrial clusters and trade corridors portfolio, focusing on Germany. You'll combine analytical research, stakeholder engagement, and policy analysis to help design and advance high-impact industrial cluster projects that bring together industry, governments, infrastructure providers, financiers, and civil society. This role is impactful because it directly contributes to accelerating the deployment of clean technologies and fuels in some of the hardest-to-abate sectors.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve conducting research on a specific industrial cluster's decarbonization potential, preparing a briefing for a stakeholder meeting, and collaborating with colleagues on a project plan. You could also be on a call with German industry representatives or policymakers, analyzing policy developments, or drafting a report to share with partners. The role is dynamic, blending analytical work with stakeholder engagement and project coordination.

🎯 Who RMI Is Looking For

  • 3-5 years of experience in energy, industrial decarbonization, or climate policy, with a strong understanding of European industrial clusters and trade corridors.
  • Proven analytical skills, including experience with quantitative and qualitative research, data analysis, and policy analysis related to heavy industry.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and project management skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups including industry, government, and financiers.
  • Knowledge of German and European industrial policy landscapes, and fluency in English (German language skills are a plus).

📝 Tips for Applying to RMI

1

Tailor your resume to highlight experience with industrial clusters, trade corridors, or heavy industry decarbonization projects, using specific metrics and outcomes.

2

In your cover letter, explicitly mention RMI's Climate-Aligned Industries program and how your background aligns with their focus on market-based solutions and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

3

Demonstrate familiarity with German industrial clusters (e.g., Ruhr, Hamburg, or chemical parks) and European policy frameworks like the EU Green Deal and Fit for 55.

4

Show your ability to work remotely and across time zones, as this role is remote and likely involves collaboration with colleagues in Europe and the US.

5

If you have any experience with clean fuels, hydrogen, or carbon capture in industrial contexts, highlight it, as these are key to RMI's work.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your specific experience with industrial clusters or trade corridors, and how you've contributed to decarbonization efforts in heavy industry.", 'Your ability to engage stakeholders across industry, government, and finance to drive collaborative projects.', "Your analytical skills and policy expertise, particularly in the European context, and how you can support RMI's market-based approach.", "Your passion for RMI's mission and a clear understanding of the Climate-Aligned Industries program's goals."]

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic cover letters that don't mention RMI's specific work or the industrial clusters focus; tailor every application to show you understand their unique approach.
  • Don't overemphasize academic or theoretical knowledge without practical examples; RMI values implementation and real-world impact.
  • Avoid ignoring the German context; even if the role is remote, knowledge of German industrial landscape and language is a plus, so not addressing it may be a missed opportunity.
