📝 Tips for Applying to CommonLit, Inc.

1

Highlight your teaching experience: Emphasize your classroom background, especially if you taught ELA in grades 6-12, and connect it to how you understand educators' pain points and can relate to them in sales conversations.

2

Quantify your sales achievements: Provide specific numbers, such as 'exceeded sales targets by X%' or 'managed a pipeline of $X' to demonstrate your ability to meet goals.

3

Showcase your CRM proficiency: Mention your experience with Salesforce or similar CRMs, and if you have used Hubspot, Notion, or other tools, list them explicitly in your resume and cover letter.

4

Tailor your cover letter to the mission: Explain why you are passionate about educational equity and how your skills can help CommonLit achieve its mission. Avoid a generic cover letter.

5

Prepare a portfolio of your sales work: If possible, include examples of successful sales strategies, email templates, or presentations you've created for previous roles to show your creativity and effectiveness.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Emphasize your dual background in education and sales, and how this unique combination makes you ideal to sell to educators. - Express genuine passion for CommonLit's mission to support students in Title I schools and improve literacy. - Provide specific examples of how you have successfully sold to schools or districts, and how you can meet and exceed sales targets. - Mention your proficiency with the specific tools listed in the job description and your willingness to learn new technologies like LLMs.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't underestimate the importance of your teaching experience: Failing to connect your classroom background to the sales role will make you seem like just another salesperson.
  • Avoid being vague about your sales metrics: Saying 'I did sales' without numbers or concrete outcomes is a missed opportunity to prove your effectiveness.
  • Don't neglect to mention your comfort with remote work: Not addressing your ability to work independently and manage your time in a remote setting could raise concerns.
