How to Apply for Rocky Mountains Region Engineer

at Trout Unlimited

๐Ÿข About Trout Unlimited

Trout Unlimited is a grassroots organization dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. With a strong science-based approach and a network of passionate volunteers, TU offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful river restoration projects across the Rocky Mountain region. Employees are driven by a mission to leave a legacy of healthy streams for future generations.

About This Role

As the Rocky Mountains Region Engineer, you will lead engineering efforts for stream restoration and fish passage projects, managing external consultants and developing internal engineering capabilities. This role is critical to expanding TU's restoration capacity, ensuring designs are ecologically sound and construction-ready. You'll directly contribute to revitalizing coldwater habitats and building climate-resilient rivers.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a site visit to a restoration project in progress, reviewing contractor work and ensuring design compliance. Afternoons could involve working in Civil 3D on a new fish passage design, then a video call with a consultant to finalize a scope of work. You'll also spend time coordinating with TU biologists and writing technical reports.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Trout Unlimited Is Looking For

  • A licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Colorado (or able to obtain quickly) with 10+ years of experience in hydraulic, civil, or environmental engineering, specifically in stream restoration and fish passage.
  • Deep expertise in natural channel design, large wood addition, and watershed conservation, with a portfolio of projects where you served as Engineer of Record.
  • Proficient in Civil 3D for construction-level designs, and experienced with total station/GPS for topographic and geomorphic surveys.
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys mentoring junior staff and working with diverse stakeholders, including landowners, agencies, and TU volunteers.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Trout Unlimited

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific stream restoration projects where you were the Engineer of Record, quantifying outcomes like miles of stream restored or fish passage improved.

2

In your cover letter, mention your familiarity with Colorado and Rocky Mountain region hydrology, and any experience working with agencies like USFWS, BLM, or state fish and wildlife departments.

3

Showcase your ability to manage consultant contracts by including examples of scopes, budgets, and schedules you developed.

4

If you have experience with large wood addition or beaver dam analogues, emphasize thatโ€”TU values natural, process-based restoration techniques.

5

Include a link to your online portfolio or project photos, as visual evidence of your design and construction oversight work is highly persuasive.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for coldwater fisheries conservation and alignment with TU's mission-driven, science-based approach.", "Specific examples of stream restoration projects you've led from concept to construction, emphasizing your role as Engineer of Record.", 'Your experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (biologists, hydrologists, contractors) and managing external engineering consultants.', 'Your willingness to travel to remote field sites in the Rocky Mountains and work in challenging conditions to ensure project success.']

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Review TU's strategic plan and recent annual reports to understand their priorities in the Rocky Mountain region, such as the 'Home Rivers Initiative' or 'Western Water and Habitat Program.'
  • โ†’ Read about TU's partnership with the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management on stream restoration projects in Colorado and surrounding states.
  • โ†’ Familiarize yourself with key TU staff in the region, such as the Rocky Mountain Director and other engineers, to understand team dynamics.
  • โ†’ Look up recent TU projects in the news or on their website that involve large wood addition or fish passage to discuss informedly.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a complex stream restoration project you engineered. How did you balance ecological goals with engineering constraints and budget?
2 How do you approach working with outside consultants to ensure quality and timeliness? Give an example of a conflict you resolved.
3 What is your experience with natural channel design and large wood addition? Can you walk through your design process for a specific project?
4 How do you stay current with evolving restoration techniques and regulations in the Rocky Mountain region?
5 Tell us about a time you had to adapt a design based on field conditions during construction. How did you handle it?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic resume without emphasizing stream restoration, fish passage, or natural channel design experience.
  • Failing to highlight your PE licensure status or ability to obtain reciprocity in Coloradoโ€”this is a hard requirement.
  • Not demonstrating a collaborative mindset; TU values teamwork with biologists and volunteers, so avoid appearing solely as a desk engineer.
