How to Apply for Research Intern

at CIVICUS

🏢 About CIVICUS

CIVICUS is a unique global alliance of over 17,000 members in 180+ countries, dedicated to defending civic freedoms and strengthening civil society. Working here means contributing to a mission-driven organization that amplifies grassroots voices and advocates for democratic values worldwide. It's an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse, multicultural team and gain exposure to pressing social issues across the globe.

About This Role

As a Research Intern, you will support the production of CIVICUS's flagship State of Civil Society Report and content for the CIVICUS Lens platform, which tracks civic space trends. Your work will involve conducting desk research, interviews, and creating social media visuals to disseminate findings. This role offers hands-on experience in research and communications while deepening your understanding of civil society challenges and innovations.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with your supervisor to discuss research priorities. You could spend the morning conducting desk research on civic space trends in a specific region, then draft a short article for the Lens platform. In the afternoon, you might create a simple infographic summarizing key findings for social media, and end the day by scheduling posts and engaging with team feedback on Slack.

🎯 Who CIVICUS Is Looking For

  • A student or recent graduate in social sciences (e.g., political science, sociology, international development) with strong academic writing skills and a keen interest in civil society.
  • Excellent command of English, able to synthesize complex information into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to CIVICUS values (e.g., human rights, civic freedoms) through volunteer work, activism, or previous internships.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working remotely in a multicultural team, with basic data visualization skills (e.g., Canva, Piktochart) or willingness to learn.
