How to Apply for Regional Training Director-Mid-Atlantic

at Emerge

๐Ÿข About Emerge

Emerge is the nation's largest network of Democratic women elected officials and candidates, with over 7,000 trained and 1,200+ currently in office. Its mission to diversify political representation makes it a uniquely impactful organization for those passionate about gender equity and progressive change. Working here means directly contributing to the pipeline of diverse leaders shaping policy at all levels.

About This Role

As Regional Training Director for the Mid-Atlantic, you'll recruit and train Democratic womenโ€”especially from the New American Majorityโ€”to run for office. You'll execute signature programs (bootcamp, step forward), manage logistics, and build partnerships across the region. This role is high-impact because every training you facilitate directly increases the number of qualified, diverse candidates on the ballot.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with volunteer advisors to plan an upcoming bootcamp, followed by reviewing applications from potential trainees. You'd then facilitate a 2-hour training session on fundraising, respond to partner inquiries, and end the day by updating the candidate tracking database. Some days include travel to in-person events like county party meetings or alumnae networking nights.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Emerge Is Looking For

  • A Democratic operative with 5+ years of experience, including 3 years in the Mid-Atlantic (PA, MD, VA, DC, DE, NJ), with a deep understanding of state and local party politics.
  • Proven campaign experience: at least one state-level and one county/municipal campaign, plus familiarity with candidate recruitment and training.
  • Strong facilitator and public speaker, comfortable leading virtual and in-person training sessions for diverse audiences.
  • Relationship-builder with a track record of managing volunteers, partners, and stakeholders to expand program reach.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Emerge

1

Highlight your Mid-Atlantic political network: name specific county parties, elected officials, or organizations you've worked with in the region.

2

Show, don't just tell, your commitment to the New American Majority: include examples of recruiting or training women of color, LGBTQ+ women, or young women.

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize facilitation and training experienceโ€”list specific workshops or curricula you've developed or led.

4

In your cover letter, reference a specific Emerge alumna or program (e.g., Emerge Maryland) to show you've done your homework.

5

Quantify your impact: include numbers like 'trained 50+ candidates in 2023' or 'recruited 20+ women from underserved communities.'

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your personal connection to Democratic women's representation and why Emerge's mission resonates with you.", 'Concrete examples of recruiting or training candidates in the Mid-Atlantic, especially from the New American Majority.', 'Your experience navigating state and local party politics to build coalitions and support candidates.', 'How your facilitation style creates an inclusive, empowering learning environment for diverse groups.']

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a training session you facilitated that had a significant impact on a candidate's campaign. What was your approach?
2 How would you recruit Democratic women from the New American Majority in a region where the party infrastructure is weak?
3 Walk us through how you'd manage logistics for a multi-day bootcamp with 50 participants, including virtual and in-person components.
4 Tell us about a time you had to navigate a conflict with a partner organization or volunteer. How did you handle it?
5 What strategies would you use to support alumnae after training to ensure they stay engaged and win elections?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus on national politics or federal campaignsโ€”this role is state and local. Avoid mentioning presidential campaigns unless directly relevant.
  • Avoid generic statements about 'wanting to help women' without tying it to specific Democratic party-building and electoral strategies.
  • Don't overlook the logistical side: this role involves event planning and CRM management. Failing to mention organizational skills can hurt you.
