How to Apply for Regional Legal Advisor - Southern Africa

at The Human Dignity Trust

🏢 About The Human Dignity Trust

The Human Dignity Trust is a unique legal charity that combines strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, and capacity-building to decriminalize LGBT+ identities in 65 jurisdictions. Working here means joining a small, globally impactful team that collaborates with local lawyers and human rights defenders to challenge discriminatory laws, offering a rare opportunity to apply legal expertise directly to social justice in some of the world's most challenging environments.

About This Role

As Regional Legal Advisor for Southern Africa, you will drive the Trust's legal strategy across multiple countries, building relationships with civil society, government, and legal professionals to identify opportunities for litigation and reform. This part-time, remote role is highly impactful as you will directly support local partners to dismantle discriminatory laws, with a focus on common law jurisdictions where the Trust's expertise is most needed.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual meeting with a partner organization in Botswana to discuss a new legal challenge, followed by reviewing a draft bill from a Zambian coalition. You might then draft a legal analysis of a recent court ruling in Zimbabwe, and later join a webinar on regional human rights mechanisms. The rest of the day could involve email correspondence with government officials or preparing materials for a workshop on strategic litigation.

🎯 Who The Human Dignity Trust Is Looking For

  • A qualified lawyer with at least 5 years of experience in human rights litigation, policy advocacy, or legislative drafting, specifically in common law jurisdictions within Southern Africa (e.g., South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi).
  • Deep knowledge of the political and legal landscape in several Southern African countries, including familiarity with key stakeholders, ongoing cases, and regional human rights mechanisms like the African Commission.
  • Exceptional English writing and oral advocacy skills, with the ability to draft legal submissions, policy briefs, and training materials for diverse audiences, from senior judges to community activists.
  • Culturally sensitive and adept at communicating with both high-level government officials and marginalized LGBT+ communities, with a demonstrated commitment to human rights and intersectional approaches.

📝 Tips for Applying to The Human Dignity Trust

1

Tailor your CV and cover letter to highlight specific experience in Southern African jurisdictions, mentioning countries where you have worked and the nature of that work (e.g., litigation, policy reform).

2

Include concrete examples of strategic litigation or legislative advocacy you have led or contributed to, especially cases involving LGBT+ rights or other marginalized groups.

3

Demonstrate your understanding of the Trust's approach by referencing their past cases or reports (e.g., the Trust's toolkit on decriminalization) and explain how your skills align.

4

Since this is a remote, part-time role, explicitly address how you will manage your time and collaborate across time zones, and note any flexibility you have for travel within the region.

5

Show your commitment to the mission by mentioning any volunteer work, pro bono cases, or memberships in human rights networks relevant to LGBT+ rights in Africa.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your motivation for working specifically with the Human Dignity Trust, referencing their unique model of supporting local lawyers rather than leading cases directly.', 'Your experience in Southern Africa, including specific countries, legal systems, and relationships with local stakeholders you have built.', 'Your ability to identify strategic opportunities for litigation and reform, with examples of how you have done so in past roles.', 'Your communication skills, especially in translating complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences and working sensitively with marginalized communities.']

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you assess the current legal landscape for LGBT+ rights in a specific Southern African country, and what opportunities for strategic litigation or reform do you see?
2 Describe a time you worked with local civil society organizations to advance a legal or policy goal. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
3 How do you approach building trust with government officials or senior legal figures while advocating for unpopular causes?
4 Given the Trust's remote and part-time structure, how would you prioritize competing demands across multiple countries?
5 What is your understanding of the Trust's 'local partner' model, and how would you ensure that your work empowers rather than supplants local actors?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid a generic application that does not reference Southern Africa or the Trust's specific mission; this role requires deep regional knowledge and passion for LGBT+ rights.
  • Do not overemphasize litigation experience without also showing policy or legislative drafting skills, as the role involves both strategic litigation and reform work.
  • Avoid language that suggests a 'savior' mentality; the Trust emphasizes supporting local leaders, so demonstrate humility and a collaborative approach.
