How to Apply for Project Leader, Technology

at Partners for Public Good

๐Ÿข About Partners for Public Good

Partners for Public Good (PPG) is a nonpartisan team dedicated to strengthening state and local government operational systemsโ€”procurement, staffing, budgeting, and technologyโ€”to ensure policy translates into real results for residents. Working at PPG means directly impacting how public services are delivered, improving efficiency and equity in government. The organization values collaboration, innovation, and a mission-driven culture, offering a unique opportunity to bridge technology and public service.

About This Role

As a Project Leader in Technology, you will oversee the execution of technology pilot and implementation projects, including project management, vendor management, and technical training for state and local governments. This role is impactful because you will shape the future of PPG's Technology Delivery Portfolio, translating program designs into actionable scopes, timelines, and team roles. You'll also lead and mentor a team of Associates, fostering a culture of excellence while directly improving government technology operations.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a stand-up meeting with your team of Associates to review project milestones and address blockers on a software modernization project for a county government. Mid-morning, you'd meet with a vendor to negotiate contract terms for an AI pilot, followed by drafting a blog post about lessons learned from a recent implementation. Afternoon could involve mentoring an Associate on stakeholder communication strategies, then preparing slides for an upcoming webinar on technology procurement best practices.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Partners for Public Good Is Looking For

  • Has 3+ years of government technology experience or related work, with deep understanding of government IT operations like data analytics, generative AI, software modernization, product management, or cybersecurity.
  • Demonstrates at least 2 years of people management experience leading multidisciplinary teams in implementing software or piloting AI tools, with a track record of mentoring and developing team members.
  • Possesses strong project management skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, collaboration tools, and generative AI platforms, and can manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Is an excellent communicator who can develop government partner engagement strategies, produce outbound materials (blogs, talks, webinars), and represent PPG at conferences.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Partners for Public Good

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific government technology projects you've led, especially those involving AI pilots or software modernization, and quantify outcomes when possible.

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your people management experience to mentoring Associates and fostering a culture of excellence, referencing PPG's mission.

3

Showcase your familiarity with state and local government contextsโ€”mention any experience with procurement, budgeting, or staffing challenges unique to the public sector.

4

Include examples of outbound materials you've produced (e.g., blog posts, webinar decks) and their impact on stakeholder engagement or program visibility.

5

Demonstrate your proficiency with generative AI tools by describing how you've used them to improve project outcomes or team productivity in previous roles.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your passion for public service and how your technology leadership can help turn policy into results for residents.', 'Highlight specific examples of leading multidisciplinary teams in government tech projects, especially AI or software implementation.', "Show your strategic thinking in translating program designs into scopes, timelines, and team roles, aligning with PPG's portfolio goals.", 'Mention your experience in developing partner engagement strategies and producing compelling outbound materials that build trust and visibility.']

2 How would you approach mentoring an Associate who is struggling with project management tasks while also balancing your own project leadership duties?
3 PPG works with resource-constrained governments. How would you prioritize features or scope for a technology project with limited budget and tight deadlines?
4 What experience do you have with generative AI in government? Can you give an example of a pilot you led or contributed to, and what were the key lessons?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus solely on private sector experience without drawing clear parallels to government contextsโ€”PPG values public sector nuance.
