How to Apply for Product Manager

at Piq Energy

🏢 About Piq Energy

Piq Energy is building an automated network model management system and autonomous grid planning and interconnection software that helps generation developers, large load developers, and utilities connect to the grid faster. Unlike traditional energy software companies, Piq is applying agentic AI to one of the most complex, high-stakes problems in the energy transition: transmission and distribution planning. Working here means directly accelerating the deployment of clean energy and grid reliability across North America and Europe.

About This Role

As a Product Manager at Piq Energy, you will own products end-to-end—from customer discovery through development, rollout, and iteration—for a purpose-built agentic grid planning and interconnection platform. You'll collaborate closely with product-minded software engineers and power systems engineers, navigating ambiguous problems to decide what matters most and get useful products into users' hands quickly. This role is pivotal because your decisions will directly shape how developers and utilities plan and interconnect new generation, storage, and load.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day with a customer call with a generation developer to understand their pain points with interconnection studies, then meet with power systems engineers to review a new feature prototype. In the afternoon, you'd prioritize the backlog for the next sprint, write a lightweight spec for an agentic workflow improvement, and test a new UI flow with an internal user. You'll constantly toggle between technical deep dives and strategic prioritization, all while keeping speed and user value front and center.

🎯 Who Piq Energy Is Looking For

  • Has 3+ years of product management experience in B2B SaaS, ideally in energy, grid software, or another highly technical domain involving complex data workflows.
  • Demonstrates strong technical fluency—able to understand and discuss power systems concepts (e.g., power flow, interconnection studies, network models) and work credibly with engineers.
  • Thrives in ambiguity and can independently prioritize among competing demands, using customer discovery and data to make judgment calls.
  • Is hands-on and scrappy: comfortable building prototypes, running tests, and iterating quickly with engineering teams rather than just writing specs.
  • Has a track record of shipping products that users love, with experience managing internal and external stakeholders through rollout and adoption.

📝 Tips for Applying to Piq Energy

1

Highlight any experience you have with grid planning, interconnection processes, or energy market software—even if it's from a different role—because Piq's domain is highly specialized and they need someone who can ramp up fast.

2

Show your technical depth by describing a time you worked closely with engineers to solve a complex data or modeling problem; avoid vague product management language and focus on concrete outcomes.

3

Demonstrate your ability to operate in ambiguity by sharing an example where you had to define a product direction with incomplete information and how you prioritized what to build first.

4

Research Piq Energy's product and the specific pain points of generation developers and utilities; in your application, reference how you'd approach improving interconnection study workflows or network model management.

5

Emphasize your comfort with rapid iteration and getting products into users' hands quickly—Piq values follow-through and speed, so avoid examples that suggest you prefer long, waterfall-style planning.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your specific interest in accelerating the energy transition through grid software, and why Piq's mission to connect to the grid faster resonates with you personally or professionally.", 'A concrete example of a product you owned end-to-end that required deep technical collaboration and delivered measurable user impact, ideally in a complex or regulated domain.', 'How you navigate ambiguity: describe a situation where you had to make prioritization decisions with imperfect data and how you validated your choices with customers or internal experts.', 'Your ability to work with both software engineers and power systems engineers—show that you can bridge technical and domain expertise to ship useful products quickly.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • → Study the interconnection process in the US and Europe: what are the key bottlenecks (e.g., queue backlogs, study delays) and how does Piq's automated network model management address them?
  • → Explore Piq Energy's website, product demos, and any public case studies to understand their technology stack and how they leverage agentic AI in grid planning.
  • → Research the competitive landscape: who are the incumbents in grid planning software (e.g., Siemens, PSS/E, PowerWorld) and what makes Piq's approach different?
  • → Understand the basics of power systems engineering: generation, transmission, distribution, and how network models are used in planning studies. This will help you speak credibly with engineers.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you prioritize features for an agentic grid planning platform when customers have different needs (generation developers vs. utilities)?
2 Describe a time you had to learn a complex technical domain quickly to make product decisions. How did you approach it?
3 Walk us through a product you took from concept to launch. What was your process for customer discovery, development, and iteration?
4 How do you balance building for internal users (e.g., power systems engineers) versus external users (e.g., developers) when their needs conflict?
5 What metrics would you use to measure the success of Piq's interconnection software, and how would you instrument them?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too generic about product management—Piq needs someone who can grasp complex energy domain concepts, so avoid applications that don't show any technical or industry-specific curiosity.
  • Overemphasizing process and frameworks (e.g., Agile ceremonies) without demonstrating outcomes; Piq values shipping and iteration over rigid methodologies.
  • Ignoring the ambiguity of the role—if you present yourself as needing clear direction or lots of structure, you'll seem like a poor fit for a startup where you must define your own path.
