How to Apply for President/Senior Leader

at CANCollaborate

๐Ÿข About CANCollaborate

CANCollaborate is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to accelerating scientific progress by breaking down structural and institutional barriers that hinder collaboration among researchers, institutions, funders, and innovators. Unlike traditional research organizations, CANCollaborate builds platforms, infrastructure, and partnerships that make the entire research ecosystem more connected and efficient. Working here means directly tackling inefficiencies that waste billions in funding and delay life-saving discoveries.

About This Role

As President, you will be the entrepreneurial leader driving CANCollaborate through its next stage of growth, reporting directly to the Chair of the Board. You'll be responsible for translating an ambitious vision into funded programs, forging strategic partnerships, and ensuring operational execution across strategy, fundraising, programs, and communications. This is a hands-on role where you'll personally build relationships with funders and stakeholders while scaling the organization's impact.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve meeting with a major funder to pitch a new initiative, then working with the program team to refine a collaboration platform's features. Later, you could be on a call with university leaders to negotiate a partnership, followed by reviewing financials and preparing for a board update. The role is varied, fast-paced, and deeply hands-on.

๐ŸŽฏ Who CANCollaborate Is Looking For

  • Proven entrepreneurial leader with experience scaling a nonprofit or mission-driven organization, ideally in the scientific research or academic ecosystem.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising from diverse sources (philanthropy, government grants, corporate partnerships) and building sustainable revenue models.
  • Deep understanding of the research collaboration landscape, including challenges around data sharing, interoperability, and coordination among institutions.
  • Strong operational and strategic skills, able to move seamlessly from board-level strategy to hands-on program execution and team management.
  • Exceptional communicator and relationship-builder who can engage researchers, funders, and innovators, and represent CANCollaborate publicly.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to CANCollaborate

1

Highlight specific examples of how you've scaled a nonprofit or initiative, including metrics like funding raised, partnerships formed, or programs launched.

2

Demonstrate your knowledge of the scientific research ecosystem by referencing current barriers to collaboration and how you've addressed them in past roles.

3

Emphasize your ability to fundraise: detail your experience with major gifts, grants, or earned revenue, and mention specific dollar amounts or funding sources.

4

Show entrepreneurial mindset by describing times you identified an opportunity, built a program from scratch, and measured its impact.

5

Tailor your cover letter to CANCollaborate's mission: explain why improving research collaboration is personally compelling and how you would advance their specific goals.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your vision for how CANCollaborate can accelerate scientific progress by improving coordination and reducing duplication.', 'Concrete fundraising achievements and your strategy for diversifying and sustaining revenue for a growing nonprofit.', "Examples of successful partnerships you've built across academia, industry, and funding organizations.", 'Your hands-on leadership style and ability to both set strategy and execute operationally in a lean, entrepreneurial environment.']

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on high-level strategy without demonstrating hands-on execution abilityโ€”this role requires both.
  • Neglecting to show specific fundraising experience or results; vague claims about 'passion for the mission' won't suffice.
  • Failing to tailor your application to CANCollaborate's unique focus on research collaboration; generic nonprofit leadership applications stand out poorly.
