How to Apply for National Member Organizer

at Dream Defenders

🏢 About Dream Defenders

Dream Defenders is a national Black freedom organization that boldly challenges capitalism and envisions a society built on interdependence and wealth redistribution. Working here means joining a movement of young activists committed to transformative change, not just a job. The organization centers Black youth and young adults, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to grassroots power-building.

About This Role

As National Member Organizer, you will own the infrastructure that engages and develops members across the country, from managing digital platforms to coordinating leadership pathways. This role is impactful because it directly strengthens the capacity of local formations and ensures members are connected, trained, and mobilized for campaigns. You'll be the backbone of national member coordination.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with checking member data in AirTable and updating the national calendar. You'll then have several 1:1 calls with core leaders to assess their development needs, followed by a working group meeting to refine campaign templates. Afternoon could involve troubleshooting the Portal or pulling reports for the team, ending with a strategy session on emerging leader pathways.

🎯 Who Dream Defenders Is Looking For

  • You have at least 3 years of community organizing experience, ideally in racial justice or youth-led movements, with a track record of building distributed teams.
  • You are deeply relational and skilled at 1:1 conversations, conflict navigation, and fostering inclusive spaces across diverse communities.
  • You are tech-savvy with hands-on experience using EveryAction, Mobilize, AirTable, or similar tools to manage member data and track engagement.
  • You think strategically about campaigns and can translate big-picture goals into actionable plans, templates, and systems for local groups.

📝 Tips for Applying to Dream Defenders

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific experience with distributed organizing and database management—mention EveryAction or AirTable by name.

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your organizing philosophy to Dream Defenders' anti-capitalist, Black liberation framework.

3

Show that you understand the role's emphasis on member infrastructure by describing a time you built or improved a system for tracking member engagement.

4

Use the application to demonstrate your writing skills—clear, compelling, and aligned with movement language, not corporate jargon.

5

If you have experience with leadership development (like training or coaching), highlight that prominently.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your commitment to Black freedom and ending capitalism, and how it aligns with Dream Defenders' mission.", "Specific examples of how you've managed member data systems and used digital tools to organize at scale.", 'Your approach to leadership development—how you identify and nurture emerging leaders through 1:1s and growth pathways.', 'A concrete instance where you supported campaign development or provided tools to strengthen local organizing.']

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic application—this role is deeply ideological; show you understand and share their values.
  • Avoid focusing only on technical skills without demonstrating relational organizing experience—they need both.
  • Don't ignore the 'distributed' nature of the role; failing to mention remote coordination or digital tools is a miss.
