How to Apply for Narrative & Communications Associate Director // Digital Organizing and Communications Strategist

at Center for Empowered Politics

🏢 About Center for Empowered Politics

The Center for Empowered Politics (CEP) and its sibling organization Seed the Vote are unique in their dual focus: training leaders of color to build long-term progressive power while running high-impact electoral volunteer mobilization. If you want to work at the intersection of narrative strategy, digital organizing, and racial justice, this is a rare opportunity to shape both year-round communications and election-year grassroots surges.

About This Role

This role is a hybrid leadership position: in election years, you’ll drive Seed the Vote’s digital volunteer mobilization, fundraising, and supporter acquisition; in off-years, you’ll lead CEP’s organizational communications and support network partners. You’ll translate complex organizing work into compelling narratives and own content across email, social, web, and press materials—making you the voice of two movement organizations.

💡 A Day in the Life

In an election year, you might start by reviewing email metrics from last night’s volunteer recruitment blast, then draft social copy for a rapid-response moment, and end the day leading a strategy call with the organizing team. In an off-year, you’d likely spend time writing a newsletter about a CEP training cohort, designing graphics for a partner toolkit, and meeting with network allies to align messaging.

🎯 Who Center for Empowered Politics Is Looking For

  • A senior digital organizer with at least 5 years of experience, including 3+ years managing staff and strategy in electoral or advocacy contexts.
  • A skilled writer and editor who can turn policy and organizing concepts into clear, emotionally resonant messages for diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in email platforms (Action Network, Solidarity Tech) and social media management, with strong graphic design skills (Canva, Adobe Suite) and video editing ability.
  • Deeply committed to racial and economic justice, with experience working in or alongside communities of color and progressive movements.

📝 Tips for Applying to Center for Empowered Politics

1

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your digital organizing experience to electoral work—mention specific campaigns or volunteer mobilization efforts you’ve led.

2

Show, don’t just tell: include links to writing samples, social media campaigns, or email series you’ve managed that drove action (signups, donations, volunteer shifts).

3

Highlight any experience with CRM tools like Action Network or Solidarity Tech, and be ready to discuss how you’ve used data to inform strategy.

4

Mention your comfort with both rapid-response (election cycle) and long-term narrative work (off-year communications planning).

5

Research Seed the Vote’s recent campaigns and CEP’s leadership programs; reference specific initiatives to show genuine interest.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your track record in digital volunteer mobilization and grassroots fundraising during election cycles.', 'Show how you translate complex organizing and policy work into accessible, compelling narratives rooted in racial and economic justice.', 'Demonstrate your ability to manage staff and strategy—cite examples of team leadership and cross-functional collaboration.', 'Express alignment with CEP’s mission of building co-governing infrastructure and Seed the Vote’s electoral focus.']

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

1 Walk us through a digital campaign you led that drove significant volunteer sign-ups or donations—what was your strategy and how did you measure success?
2 How do you tailor messaging for different audiences (e.g., donors, volunteers, press) while maintaining message discipline?
3 Describe a time you managed a rapid-response communications effort during a political crisis or election cycle.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic application without referencing the dual role (election year vs. off-year) or the specific focus on leaders of color.
  • Focusing only on communications skills without demonstrating digital organizing experience (e.g., managing volunteer lists, running acquisition campaigns).
  • Ignoring the technical requirements—if you don’t mention CRMs or design tools, you’ll seem underqualified.
