How to apply for Midstream Engineering Project Manager
AECOM
About AECOM
AECOM is a global infrastructure leader known for delivering innovative, sustainable solutions across transportation, water, energy, and environmental sectors. Working here means contributing to high-impact projects that shape communities and advance sustainability, all while collaborating with top-tier professionals in a flexible, remote-friendly environment.
About the role
As a Midstream Engineering Project Manager, you'll lead conceptual studies and detailed design projects for midstream infrastructure—gathering, transportation, storage, and processing assets—while managing profit and loss, client relationships, and change management. This remote role is pivotal in driving AECOM's seller/doer model, ensuring projects meet technical, financial, and client goals.
A typical day
You might start your day with a client call to discuss project progress, then review schedules and budgets in Primavera P6. Later, you'd coordinate with technical teams on design changes, address a change order, and prepare a proposal for a new midstream opportunity—all while ensuring projects stay profitable and on track.
Who AECOM is looking for
- Experienced project manager with 8+ years in midstream oil & gas or energy infrastructure, including P&L responsibility and client-facing roles.
- Proficient in project management tools like Primavera P6 or MS Project, with a track record of managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong communicator who can coordinate internal teams, contractors, vendors, and clients, and is willing to travel to field locations.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably civil, mechanical, or petroleum) and PMP certification is a plus.
Tips for this application
- Highlight specific midstream projects you've managed, including scope, budget, and outcomes, to demonstrate direct relevance.
- Quantify your P&L experience—mention project values, cost savings, or revenue impacts to show financial acumen.
- Emphasize your seller/doer approach by describing how you've grown client accounts or won repeat business.
- Show proficiency in Primavera P6 or MS Project by detailing how you've used these tools to manage schedules and resources.
- Mention your ability to travel and any experience with remote collaboration tools, as AECOM values flexibility and field engagement.
What to cover in your cover letter
['Your hands-on experience managing midstream projects from concept through detailed design, including specific asset types.', 'Your financial management skills, with examples of P&L responsibility and how you ensured project profitability.', "Your client-facing abilities, including how you've served as the primary interface and built trust with diverse stakeholders.", "Your adaptability to remote work and willingness to travel, aligning with AECOM's flexible yet field-oriented culture."]
Research before applying
- AECOM's recent midstream projects and their sustainability goals to understand their market focus.
- AECOM's company culture and values, especially around remote work and diversity, to tailor your responses.
- The types of clients AECOM serves in the midstream sector (private, federal, utilities, etc.) and their specific needs.
- AECOM's use of project management software and any proprietary tools they might use, to align your skills.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Walk us through a midstream project you managed from concept to completion—what were the key challenges and how did you overcome them?
- How do you approach profit and loss management for a project? Share an example of how you improved financial performance.
- Describe a time when you had to manage multiple projects with competing priorities. How did you allocate resources?
- How do you handle change management when a client requests significant scope changes mid-project?
- What experience do you have with Primavera P6 or MS Project, and how do you use these tools to keep projects on track?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Focusing only on technical engineering skills without highlighting project management and financial oversight experience.
- Neglecting to mention client-facing or business development experience, as the role requires a seller/doer mindset.
- Being vague about your remote work experience or unwillingness to travel, which could conflict with job requirements.
