How to Apply for Membership Coordinator

at California Data Collaborative

๐Ÿข About California Data Collaborative

The California Data Collaborative (CaDC) is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to transforming water management through open data and collaborative tools. Working here means contributing to a sustainable California future, tackling one of the state's most pressing challenges with innovative technology and partnerships.

About This Role

As Membership Coordinator, you'll be the face of CaDC to water agencies across California, driving growth and retention. Your work directly supports informed water planning by connecting members with open-source tools and data, and you'll orchestrate key events like the annual California Water Data Summit.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Start your day by checking Slack and Asana for member inquiries and event tasks. You might hop on a Zoom call to onboard a new water agency, then spend the afternoon drafting a newsletter or planning logistics for the annual Summit. Later, you'll review membership data to identify at-risk accounts and reach out to strengthen relationships.

๐ŸŽฏ Who California Data Collaborative Is Looking For

  • Experience in member success or account management within a nonprofit, utility, or water sector environment, with a track record of growing and retaining members.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to articulate the value of open data and technical tools to both executive directors and frontline water staff.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with proven ability to manage multiple projects (events, onboarding, outreach) remotely using Slack, Notion, Asana, and Zoom.
  • Passionate about water sustainability and data-driven decision-making, with a bachelor's degree in environmental science, public policy, communications, or equivalent experience.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to California Data Collaborative

1

Highlight any experience with water agencies, utilities, or environmental nonprofits in your resume and cover letterโ€”even if it's tangential.

2

Showcase specific examples of how you've grown membership or improved retention using data or CRM tools.

3

Mention familiarity with open-source tools or data platforms, and explain how you'd connect members to CaDC's resources.

4

Tailor your cover letter to address how you'd plan and execute the annual Water Data Summit, including logistics and stakeholder engagement.

5

If you have experience with remote collaboration tools (Slack, Notion, Asana), explicitly list them and describe how you stay organized.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for water sustainability and how your background aligns with CaDC's mission.", 'Concrete examples of member relationship management, including onboarding and retention strategies.', 'Event planning experience, especially for conferences or summits, with emphasis on logistics and stakeholder coordination.', 'Ability to communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences, from data scientists to water utility managers.']
