How to Apply for Managing Director

at Impact Collective

🏢 About Impact Collective

Impact Collective is a unique, founder-led nonprofit that mobilizes wealthy white individuals to use their influence and resources to close the racial wealth gap. It stands out for its relational, cohort-based model and its commitment to proximate leadership, making it a rare opportunity to drive systemic change from within a privileged community.

About This Role

As Managing Director, you will be the right hand to the Executive Director, leading the internal team and overseeing programs, operations, and finance. This role is impactful because you'll shape the strategy and infrastructure of a growing organization that is directly addressing racial wealth inequality, ensuring its programs are effective and sustainable.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with the Executive Director to align on priorities, followed by meetings with the three Directors to oversee programs, operations, and finance. You might spend time reviewing budget reports, developing systems for team collaboration, and leading a virtual all-hands meeting, with the afternoon reserved for strategic planning or one-on-one coaching sessions with direct reports.

🎯 Who Impact Collective Is Looking For

  • Proven senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization, ideally as part of a leadership team, with a track record of strategic decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, manage, and develop high-performing teams with care, including supervising directors across multiple functions.
  • Strong project management and organizational design skills, with experience building systems and structures in a growing organization.
  • Experience managing operations, HR, and/or finance functions, including budget execution and vendor relationships.

📝 Tips for Applying to Impact Collective

1

In your resume and cover letter, explicitly highlight your experience managing a team of directors and building organizational systems, using concrete metrics.

2

Showcase your understanding of racial equity work and your personal commitment to the mission, perhaps through volunteer roles or past projects.

3

Since the role is remote, emphasize your experience leading distributed teams and using remote collaboration tools.

4

Mention any experience working with fiscal sponsors or in a startup-like nonprofit environment, as this is a growing organization.

5

Tailor your application to address the relational model of Impact Collective; demonstrate your ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including wealthy donors.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
