How to Apply for Manager, Constituent & Data Services
at National Catholic Reporter
🏢 About National Catholic Reporter
The National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is an independent, nonprofit news organization covering the Catholic Church and broader issues of faith, justice, and spirituality since 1964. It is known for its progressive, investigative journalism and is funded primarily by readers and donors, making its advancement team critical to its mission. Working here means contributing to a legacy of independent Catholic journalism that holds power accountable and amplifies marginalized voices.
About This Role
As Manager of Constituent & Data Services, you will own the systems and data that power NCR's fundraising—from Salesforce NPSP administration to gift processing and donor analytics. You'll be the go-to expert for donor data strategy, ensuring that the reader-to-donor journey is seamless and that every gift is accurately recorded and acknowledged. This role is pivotal in helping NCR grow its donor base and sustain its independent journalism.
💡 A Day in the Life
Your day might start with a quick check of gift processing batches, ensuring all donations are accurately recorded and acknowledged. Then you'll meet with the Advancement team to review donor analytics and plan segmentation for an upcoming campaign. Later, you might configure a new workflow in Salesforce NPSP to automate stewardship tasks or reconcile gift records with Finance. You'll also field requests from Marketing for donor lists and provide insights on conversion rates.

📝 Tips for Applying to National Catholic Reporter
Highlight your Salesforce NPSP admin experience prominently—NCR is looking for an internal expert, so mention specific customizations, workflows, and integrations you've built.
Quantify your impact on fundraising: e.g., 'Improved donor retention by 15% through segmentation and stewardship automation.'
Show familiarity with Catholic or faith-based nonprofit contexts, or express genuine interest in NCR's mission of independent journalism.
Demonstrate experience with small-team resourcefulness—NCR is a nonprofit newsroom, so you'll need to be hands-on and strategic.
Include examples of cross-departmental collaboration, especially with marketing and finance, to show you can bridge data and fundraising goals.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
In your cover letter, emphasize: 1) Your hands-on Salesforce NPSP expertise, including specific projects like implementing moves management or wealth screening. 2) Your ability to turn data into actionable fundraising insights that drive donor growth. 3) Your commitment to NCR's mission and understanding of the reader-to-donor journey. 4) Your experience ensuring compliance and data integrity in gift processing.
Generate Cover Letter →🔍 Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- → Read recent NCR articles to understand their editorial voice and key issues they cover, especially those related to social justice and church reform.
- → Review NCR's annual report or donor page to learn about their fundraising priorities and donor base.
- → Research Salesforce NPSP best practices for small nonprofits, including common apps like Grantmaking or Engagement Plans.
- → Look into NCR's history and independence—understand why they are not funded by the Church hierarchy and how that impacts their fundraising.
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Focusing only on technical Salesforce skills without connecting them to fundraising outcomes—NCR wants a strategic partner, not just an admin.
- Ignoring the mission: NCR is a faith-based, independent newsroom; applicants who don't show interest in their work may be seen as a poor fit.
- Overlooking compliance: failing to mention IRS regulations or donor privacy could signal a lack of experience in nonprofit gift processing.
