How to Apply for Major Gifts Officer - Rocky Mountain Region
at Trout Unlimited
🏢 About Trout Unlimited
Trout Unlimited is a national conservation powerhouse with 300,000 members, 400+ chapters, and a $140M budget, dedicated to protecting coldwater fisheries and rivers. Unlike many environmental groups, TU combines grassroots volunteer energy with professional restoration, science, and policy expertise, offering a unique chance to fund real on-the-ground impact. Working here means joining a mission-driven team that has scaled rapidly while staying rooted in local communities.
About This Role
As a Major Gifts Officer for the Rocky Mountain Region, you'll manage a portfolio of 100–125 donors and prospects across six states, with a focus on growing a $1M+ portfolio to $2–3M within 3–4 years. You'll be responsible for the full cycle of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of six- and seven-figure gifts, helping TU accelerate its exponential growth. This is a remote, high-impact role where you'll directly fuel conservation wins across the Rockies.
💡 A Day in the Life
Your day might start with a virtual donor meeting over coffee, followed by crafting a personalized solicitation proposal for a seven-figure ask. In the afternoon, you could be on a plane to Montana for a chapter event, where you'll meet with a prospect who's passionate about native trout. You'll end the day updating your moves management tracker and debriefing with the conservation team on a new project that could excite your donors.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who Trout Unlimited Is Looking For
- Proven track record of personally soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure major gifts, with at least 5–7 years of frontline fundraising experience.
- Deep familiarity with the Rocky Mountain region (AZ, CO, MT, NM, UT, WY) and an existing network of philanthropic relationships in those states.
- Experience managing a portfolio of 100+ donors, with a strategic, data-driven approach to moves management and pipeline growth.
- Passion for coldwater conservation and the ability to articulate TU's mission authentically to high-net-worth donors, even if you're not an angler yourself.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working remotely, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and willingness to travel extensively across the region.
📝 Tips for Applying to Trout Unlimited
Quantify your fundraising success in your resume—include specific dollar amounts, number of gifts closed, and portfolio growth metrics (e.g., 'grew portfolio from $1.2M to $2.5M in 3 years').
Highlight any experience working with donors in the six focus states; if you have personal or professional ties to the Rockies, mention them explicitly.
Demonstrate familiarity with Trout Unlimited's conservation model—reference specific TU campaigns or projects in the region, such as the Colorado River restoration or Montana's Smith River.
Tailor your cover letter to the $1M+ to $2–3M portfolio growth goal, explaining how you would approach donor cultivation and solicitation in a remote setting.
Show you understand the difference between annual fund and major gifts—emphasize your ability to build deep, multi-year relationships rather than transactional asks.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
1. Your specific experience closing six- and seven-figure gifts, with concrete examples. 2. Your knowledge of and connections in the Rocky Mountain region, including any existing donor networks. 3. How you would strategically grow a $1M portfolio to $2–3M within 3–4 years, including moves management and donor engagement tactics. 4. Your personal commitment to coldwater conservation and why TU's mission resonates with you.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Focusing only on your general fundraising skills without demonstrating specific major gift closing experience—this role requires a proven track record at the six- and seven-figure level.
- Ignoring the regional aspect—if you don't show familiarity with the Rockies or a plan to travel and build relationships there, you'll seem unprepared for the territory.
- Treating this as a generic remote fundraising job—TU's culture is deeply rooted in conservation and volunteerism, so failing to connect with the mission will be a turnoff.
