How to Apply for Legal and Policy Associate

at Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability

🏢 About Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability

The Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability (CTEA) is a unique legal advocacy organization that works at the intersection of international investment, environmental justice, and community empowerment. Unlike larger NGOs, CTEA focuses on building the legal capacity of local partners in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, and has a dedicated China Fellows Project to foster a network of attorneys pursuing environmental and climate justice. This is a chance to work directly on cutting-edge issues of corporate accountability and transnational law in a nimble, impact-driven environment.

About This Role

As a Legal and Policy Associate, you will be at the heart of CTEA's legal and programmatic work, conducting research on international and national laws related to human rights, environmental protection, climate change, and corporate liability. You will also investigate foreign direct investment in critical mineral mining and energy, and prepare submissions to UN human rights bodies. This role is impactful because it directly supports communities affected by extractive industries and helps hold investors and governments accountable through legal and policy advocacy.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve researching a specific country's environmental disclosure laws to support a partner's advocacy campaign, drafting a section of a UN submission on climate justice, and attending a virtual meeting with colleagues and partners across time zones to strategize on a corporate accountability case. You'll balance independent legal analysis with collaborative problem-solving, all aimed at advancing environmental and climate justice.

🎯 Who Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability Is Looking For

  • A law graduate or lawyer with strong research skills in international environmental law, human rights law, and corporate liability, ideally with exposure to ESG disclosure frameworks.
  • Experience working on issues related to extractive industries, foreign direct investment, or community advocacy in Africa, Latin America, or Asia, demonstrating cultural competency and a commitment to environmental justice.
  • Ability to conduct policy research and analysis on complex regulatory frameworks, and to draft clear, persuasive submissions for UN human rights mechanisms or similar bodies.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Chinese is highly desirable given CTEA's geographic focus and China Fellows Project.

📝 Tips for Applying to Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability

1

Highlight any experience you have with legal research on international investment law, environmental law, or human rights law, especially if it involved extractive industries or critical minerals.

2

Demonstrate familiarity with UN human rights mechanisms and the process for preparing submissions (e.g., UPR, Special Procedures).

3

Show your ability to work collaboratively with partners in the Global South; mention any experience working with local organizations or communities.

4

If you have language skills relevant to CTEA's regions (Africa, Latin America, Asia), emphasize them, as they are a significant asset.

5

Tailor your cover letter to CTEA's specific approach: mention their China Fellows Project and their focus on building local legal capacity, not just doing research from afar.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your commitment to environmental and climate justice, and why CTEA's mission resonates with you.", 'Specific examples of legal or policy research you have conducted on corporate accountability, ESG, or extractive industries.', 'Any experience you have in preparing advocacy materials for international bodies or supporting local partners in legal advocacy.', 'Your ability to work remotely and collaboratively across time zones, and your familiarity with the regions CTEA works in.']

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too generic about environmental law without showing specific knowledge of transnational corporate accountability or extractive industries.
