How to Apply for Lead Product Designer

at Catalyst Exchange

🏢 About Catalyst Exchange

Catalyst Exchange is a mission-driven nonprofit that has empowered over 1,500 organizations since 2020 with a remarkable 94% project success rate. By connecting nonprofits to expertise and resources, they directly amplify social impact. If you want your design work to contribute to meaningful change, this is a unique opportunity to blend product design with purpose.

About This Role

As Lead Product Designer, you'll own the end-to-end design of Catalyst Exchange's platform, from concept to launch, ensuring a seamless user experience for nonprofits seeking support. You'll establish a cohesive design system, conduct user research, and mentor other designers—all while leveraging AI tools to accelerate prototyping. This role is impactful because your designs will directly help organizations build capacity and deepen their community impact.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a standup with product and engineering to align on priorities, followed by deep work on wireframes or prototypes in Figma, using AI tools to quickly test variations. Midday, you could run a usability test with a nonprofit user, then spend the afternoon refining the design system or mentoring a junior designer on a component library. The day ends with async feedback on a design review.

🎯 Who Catalyst Exchange Is Looking For

  • A designer with 5+ years of experience in product and UI/UX design, backed by a strong portfolio that showcases end-to-end product work, not just visual design.
  • Proficient in Figma (preferred) and experienced in building and maintaining design systems that scale across a platform.
  • Skilled in user research methods (e.g., usability testing, interviews) and data-informed design decisions, with a track record of improving metrics.
  • Comfortable with AI-enabled tools (e.g., for rapid prototyping, user testing) and eager to integrate them into the design process for efficiency.

📝 Tips for Applying to Catalyst Exchange

1

Tailor your portfolio to highlight projects where you led design from research to delivery, especially for platforms with multiple user types (e.g., nonprofits, experts).

2

Include a case study that demonstrates your experience with design systems—show how you created or maintained one and the impact on consistency and developer handoff.

3

Mention your experience with AI tools (e.g., using ChatGPT for user research synthesis or Midjourney for concept exploration) and how they sped up your workflow.

4

Research Catalyst Exchange's mission and past projects (e.g., their 94% success rate) and weave that into your cover letter to show genuine interest.

5

Submit a PDF of your portfolio with a brief written explanation for each project, as some hiring managers prefer reading over clicking through prototypes.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Emphasize your passion for using design to drive social impact and how your skills align with Catalyst Exchange's mission to help nonprofits.", 'Highlight your experience leading design systems and user research, with specific metrics or outcomes (e.g., improved user satisfaction scores).', "Showcase your proficiency with AI tools and how you've used them to iterate faster or uncover insights, as this is a key requirement.", 'Mention any experience mentoring or guiding other designers, and how you ensure quality and consistency across a team.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Explore Catalyst Exchange's website and blog to understand their current platform features, user base, and recent success stories.
  • Look up their 94% project success rate—what metrics define success? This shows you care about impact.
  • Check if they have any case studies or testimonials from nonprofits they've served. Use these to understand user pain points.
  • Search for any design-related content they've published (e.g., design principles, UX guidelines) to see if they already have a design culture.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through a project where you established a design system from scratch. What challenges did you face and how did you ensure adoption?
2 How do you incorporate user research into your design process? Can you give an example where research changed your design direction?
3 Describe a time you used an AI tool to accelerate prototyping or testing. What was the outcome?
4 How would you approach designing for a platform that serves both nonprofits seeking help and experts offering support?
5 Tell us about a time you mentored a junior designer. How did you balance guidance with letting them own their work?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic portfolio without a case study that shows end-to-end product design—they want to see your process, not just final screens.
  • Ignoring the AI tool requirement—if you don't mention AI experience, you'll likely be filtered out, even if you're willing to learn.
  • Focusing only on visual design in your application—emphasize user research, design systems, and mentoring to match the job description.
