How to Apply for Lead HR Business Partner

at Scout Motors

🏢 About Scout Motors

Scout Motors is reimagining iconic American SUVs as next-gen all-electric trucks, blending heritage with sustainability. Backed by Volkswagen Group, the company is building a future-focused brand from the ground up in the US, offering a unique opportunity to shape organizational culture and talent strategy in a high-growth, mission-driven environment.

About This Role

As Lead HR Business Partner, you'll serve as a senior advisor to executives, driving organizational design, workforce planning, and talent strategy for a startup-like EV manufacturer. This role is pivotal in leading change initiatives, building leadership pipelines, and fostering an inclusive culture as Scout Motors scales from concept to production.

💡 A Day in the Life

You'll start your day reviewing workforce analytics and meeting with the VP of Manufacturing to discuss headcount needs for a new assembly line. Later, you'll facilitate a succession planning session with the executive team and partner with the Talent COE to launch a leadership development program. Afternoons may involve coaching a plant manager on employee relations or presenting a change management plan for a new shift structure.

🎯 Who Scout Motors Is Looking For

  • An HR leader with 12+ years of progressive experience, including significant time as a strategic HRBP in fast-paced, complex environments (e.g., manufacturing, automotive, or tech startups).
  • Deep expertise in organizational design and change management, with a track record of leading transformations in companies scaling from early-stage to mass production.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret workforce data and influence C-suite decisions, combined with exceptional communication and executive presence.
  • A champion of inclusion and accountability, with experience building talent strategies that align with sustainability and innovation goals.

📝 Tips for Applying to Scout Motors

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific examples of organizational design and change management in high-growth or manufacturing contexts, using metrics (e.g., headcount growth, retention rates).

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your experience to Scout Motors' mission of sustainable mobility and reimagining an American icon.

3

Research Scout Motors' current production timeline and challenges (e.g., supply chain, talent acquisition in EV sector) and propose a 90-day plan in your cover letter or interview.

4

Emphasize your experience partnering with C-suite executives in a startup-like environment, not just large corporates.

5

Showcase any experience with union avoidance or labor relations, as manufacturing roles often involve these dynamics.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Express genuine passion for Scout Motors' mission and the opportunity to build a sustainable American brand.", "Highlight your experience leading organizational design and workforce planning during a company's growth phase.", 'Demonstrate your ability to drive change management and talent strategy in a fast-paced, innovative environment.', 'Mention specific results from past HRBP roles, such as improved retention, leadership pipeline development, or successful restructuring.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Study Scout Motors' product roadmap (e.g., Terra truck, Traveler SUV) and manufacturing timeline (e.g., South Carolina plant opening in 2026).
  • Review news about Volkswagen Group's investment and Scout's strategy to compete with Rivian and Tesla.
  • Understand the talent challenges in the EV industry, especially for engineering and skilled trades roles.
  • Look into Scout's stated values (e.g., sustainability, innovation, American heritage) and how they align with HR practices.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you approach organizational design for a new EV manufacturing plant from scratch?
2 Describe a time you led a complex change initiative; what was your framework and how did you measure success?
3 How do you balance long-term talent strategy with immediate hiring needs in a high-growth company?
4 What is your philosophy on building an inclusive culture in a manufacturing environment?
5 How would you use workforce analytics to advise executives on headcount planning and cost optimization?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic resume without tailoring it to the EV/manufacturing industry or highlighting change management experience.
  • Avoid focusing solely on operational HR tasks (e.g., payroll, benefits) rather than strategic business partnership.
  • Don't overlook the importance of cultural fit – Scout Motors is building a new brand, so showing adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit is key.
