How to Apply for Lead - Global Leadership Accelerator

at WAN-IFRA

๐Ÿข About WAN-IFRA

WAN-IFRA's Women in News (WIN) programme is a globally recognized initiative dedicated to advancing gender equality in media through leadership development, research, and advocacy. Working across Africa, the Arab Region, Southeast Asia, and Europe, WIN offers a unique opportunity to drive systemic change in complex, politically sensitive environments. Joining WIN means contributing to a mission that directly empowers women journalists and strengthens media freedom worldwide.

About This Role

As the Lead for the Global Leadership Accelerator, you will design, deliver, and continuously improve a flagship leadership programme that transforms the careers of women journalists across multiple regions. This role is impactful because you will directly shape the curriculum, manage participant journeys, and ensure the programme's sustainability, ultimately fostering a network of empowered women leaders who drive gender equality in media. Your work will influence how media organizations operate and how women's voices are amplified globally.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with regional coordinators in Africa and Southeast Asia to review participant progress and address any safety concerns. You could then spend a few hours refining the accelerator curriculum, incorporating feedback from a recent coaching session, followed by a meeting with a partner organization to discuss participant selection criteria. The afternoon might involve analyzing M&E data to prepare a quarterly impact report for donors, and end with a mentoring call with a participant navigating digital harassment in her newsroom.

๐ŸŽฏ Who WAN-IFRA Is Looking For

  • Proven experience in leading leadership development or capacity-building programmes, specifically in media or gender equality contexts, with a track record of achieving measurable impact.
  • Deep understanding of safety dynamics for journalists, including online harassment, sexual harassment, and digital safety, and ability to integrate these into programme design.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multi-country or cross-regional programmes in complex, politically sensitive, or hostile media environments, with strong stakeholder management skills.
  • Expertise in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) for leadership programmes, including designing metrics and reporting on leadership impact and sustainability.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to WAN-IFRA

1

Highlight your experience with gender equality and media development, not just general leadership trainingโ€”mention specific programmes or regions you've worked in.

2

Provide concrete examples of how you've addressed safety dynamics (e.g., online harassment) in previous programmes, including any training modules or policies you developed.

3

Show your ability to work across cultures by detailing your experience coordinating teams or participants in multiple countries, especially in politically sensitive contexts.

4

Emphasize your M&E skills: include examples of how you tracked participant progress, measured leadership impact, and used data to improve programme design.

5

Tailor your cover letter to WIN's mission: mention why gender equality in media matters to you and how this role aligns with your career goals.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for gender equality in media and alignment with WIN's mission to strengthen women's leadership in journalism.", 'Specific experience managing cross-regional programmes in challenging environments, with examples of overcoming obstacles.', "Your expertise in safety dynamics for journalists, including how you've integrated digital safety and anti-harassment measures into leadership training.", 'Your approach to M&E and how you ensure programmes are sustainable and impactful beyond the funding period.']

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic leadership experience without specific ties to media, gender, or safety dynamicsโ€”this role requires niche expertise.
  • Don't overlook the importance of M&E; failing to discuss how you measure impact can signal a lack of programme management rigor.
  • Avoid a one-size-fits-all approach in your application; tailor examples to show you understand the regional diversity and political sensitivity of WIN's work.
