How to Apply for Senior Technical Animator

at Unknownworlds

๐Ÿข About Unknownworlds

Unknownworlds is the indie studio behind the critically acclaimed Subnautica series, known for its unique underwater survival gameplay and immersive world-building. Joining the team means working on Subnautica 2, a highly anticipated sequel, with a remote-first culture that values creativity and technical excellence.

About This Role

As Senior Technical Animator, you'll be the bridge between animation and engineering, implementing and optimizing character animation systems in Unreal Engine 5 for Subnautica 2. Your work directly impacts the fluidity of creature movements, player interactions, and the overall immersion of the underwater world.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a stand-up meeting with the animation and engineering teams to discuss ongoing tasks. You'll spend time in UE5 setting up Animation Blueprints for a new creature, tweaking Control Rigs, and testing physics interactions, then collaborate with a designer to ensure the animations feel responsive in multiplayer.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Unknownworlds Is Looking For

  • A technical animator with 7+ years of experience and at least one shipped Unreal Engine 5 title, demonstrating deep knowledge of Animation Blueprints, Control Rigs, and physics assets.
  • Proficient in real-time character rigging (weighting, blend shapes, deformation joints) using Blender or similar software, with a strong understanding of multiplayer animation constraints.
  • Experienced in prototyping and shipping procedural animation and physics-based solutions for gameplay, with a collaborative mindset to work across disciplines.
  • Passionate about the Subnautica franchise and eager to contribute to its unique creature and character animation needs.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Unknownworlds

1

Highlight your specific UE5 experienceโ€”mention any shipped UE5 titles and detail your role in implementing animation systems.

2

Showcase your work on creature or non-humanoid animation, as Subnautica 2 features diverse underwater life.

3

Provide a portfolio with clear breakdowns of your Animation Blueprint logic, Control Rigs, and physics setups.

4

Mention any experience with multiplayer animation systems, as the role involves meeting multiplayer requirements.

5

Tailor your cover letter to express enthusiasm for the Subnautica series and understanding of its unique animation challenges.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your UE5 expertise and shipped title experience, specifically in technical animation.', 'Demonstrate your ability to collaborate with animation, design, art, and engineering teams.', 'Express passion for the Subnautica franchise and how your skills can enhance the underwater world.', 'Highlight any experience with procedural animation, physics, or tools development for animators.']

2 How do you handle animation blending and networking in a multiplayer environment?
3 Describe a time you optimized a physics asset to meet performance constraints without sacrificing quality.
4 How would you approach rigging a creature with multiple limbs for underwater movement?
5 Tell us about a tool you built for animatorsโ€”what problem did it solve and how did you implement it?
