How to Apply for Associate Director, Employee Relations

at Rocketship

🏢 About Rocketship

Rocketship Public Schools is a mission-driven charter school network operating in multiple states, focused on providing high-quality education to students in underserved communities. Unlike many charter networks, Rocketship is non-union, which means the Employee Relations function plays a critical role in directly shaping a fair, safe, and supportive workplace culture without the involvement of collective bargaining. Working here offers the chance to make a tangible impact on student success by ensuring that staff are treated equitably and that employment decisions align with both legal requirements and the organization's values.

About This Role

As the Associate Director of Employee Relations, you will be the central subject-matter expert for complex, sensitive, and high-risk ER matters across a multi-state, non-union network. You will conduct impartial investigations, develop well-supported findings, and ensure employment decisions comply with policies, laws, and student-safety obligations. Additionally, you will oversee HR compliance operations, including mandatory training, personnel records governance, and internal audits, working closely with Regional Talent Leads, the Chief Talent Officer, and employment counsel. This role is impactful because it directly protects both the organization from legal risk and staff from unfair treatment, all while supporting a mission-driven educational environment.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve conducting a sensitive investigation interview with a staff member, analyzing findings to draft a comprehensive report, and consulting with employment counsel on next steps. You could also coordinate with Regional Talent Leads on compliance training completion, review personnel records for audit readiness, and meet with the Chief Talent Officer to discuss high-risk cases. Throughout, you balance legal risk, organizational policy, and the mission-driven need to maintain a safe and equitable workplace for all staff.

🎯 Who Rocketship Is Looking For

  • Extensive experience (typically 7+ years) in employee relations, HR compliance, or employment law, with a proven track record of conducting complex, high-risk investigations in multi-state, non-union environments.
  • Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws, especially those relevant to charter schools and student-safety obligations (e.g., mandatory reporting, background checks).
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to write clear, well-supported investigation reports and recommendations that withstand legal scrutiny.
  • Experience managing HR compliance operations such as mandatory training, personnel records, and audit coordination, preferably in an education or mission-driven nonprofit setting.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with legal counsel, senior leaders, and regional teams while maintaining impartiality and confidentiality.
