How to Apply for Finance & Accounting Manager

at Convergentresearch

🏢 About Convergentresearch

Convergent Research operates a unique model of Focused Research Organizations (FROs) that accelerate scientific breakthroughs. Working here means supporting high-impact, mission-driven science with a lean, agile finance function. The remote-first culture and focus on scalability make it an exciting place for finance professionals who want to contribute to meaningful research.

About This Role

As the Finance & Accounting Manager, you'll build and manage the financial infrastructure that enables multiple FROs to operate efficiently. You'll ensure compliance across diverse entities while scaling processes to support rapid growth. This role is critical in freeing scientists to focus on discovery by handling the financial backend.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start by reviewing cash flow across FROs, then meet with a project lead to budget a new initiative. After lunch, you'd reconcile grant expenses and prepare a compliance report for an external auditor. The day ends with a call with the CFO to discuss scaling the accounting system for a new FRO.

🎯 Who Convergentresearch Is Looking For

  • Proven experience in nonprofit or research finance, including grant accounting and fund accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, compliance requirements (e.g., Uniform Guidance), and financial systems like QuickBooks or NetSuite.
  • Ability to design scalable processes and work cross-functionally with remote teams and external partners (e.g., auditors, banks).
  • Mission-driven and comfortable with ambiguity, as the FRO model evolves quickly.

📝 Tips for Applying to Convergentresearch

1

Highlight any experience with multi-entity consolidation or managing finances for a portfolio of projects.

2

In your resume, quantify impact: e.g., 'Managed $X budget across Y entities, ensuring 100% compliance.'

3

Tailor your cover letter to show understanding of the FRO model and how finance enables science.

4

Mention specific tools you've used (e.g., Expensify, Bill.com, Adaptive Insights) and how you've improved processes.

5

If you have experience with 501(c)(3) compliance or federal grants, lead with that.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your passion for mission-driven work and how finance supports scientific progress.', 'Specific examples of scaling financial operations or managing multi-entity structures.', 'Your familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards and compliance.', 'Your ability to collaborate remotely with diverse teams and external partners.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Read about the FRO model on Convergent Research's website and understand how it differs from traditional research institutes.
  • Review the specific FROs currently operating (e.g., Arc Institute, etc.) and their funding sources.
  • Understand the Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) for federal grant compliance.
  • Look at the company's leadership team and any recent blog posts or news about their work.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you design a financial reporting system for multiple FROs with different funding sources?
2 Describe a time you improved a financial process for scalability. What was the outcome?
3 How do you ensure compliance when managing grants from multiple federal and private funders?
4 Given the remote nature, how would you foster collaboration between finance and scientific teams?
5 What financial metrics would you track to ensure the health of a research organization?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't emphasize for-profit experience without connecting it to nonprofit or research contexts.
  • Avoid generic statements about 'managing budgets' without specifics on compliance or multi-entity complexity.
  • Don't ignore the remote aspect—show you have experience working asynchronously and self-managing.
