How to Apply for Senior Audit Manager, Non-Profit

at Aprio

๐Ÿข About Aprio

Aprio is a progressive, fast-growing advisory and accounting firm that combines the resources of a national practice with the personal touch of a boutique. The firm's Assurance team helps clients maximize opportunities, and its commitment to innovation and future-focused solutions makes it an exciting place for professionals who want to grow. With a strong emphasis on work-life balance and a comprehensive benefits package from day one, Aprio stands out as an employer that invests in its people.

About This Role

As a Senior Audit Manager, Non-Profit, you will lead assurance engagements for tax-exempt organizations, including Single Audits under Uniform Guidance. You will be the primary point of contact for boards and finance teams, helping them navigate complex compliance requirements and anticipate risks. This role is critical because nonprofits face high-stakes compliance burdens where missed requirements can jeopardize funding, and your expertise will directly protect and empower these organizations.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve reviewing audit workpapers, meeting with a nonprofit client's finance team to discuss upcoming compliance deadlines, and mentoring staff on complex accounting issues. You'll also spend time researching new regulations, preparing for board presentations, and collaborating with partners to grow the practice. Expect a mix of technical review, client interaction, and team development.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Aprio Is Looking For

  • Extensive experience (7+ years) in public accounting with a focus on nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, including leading Single Audits under Uniform Guidance.
  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards (FASB) and federal grant compliance, with the ability to communicate complex regulations clearly to boards and finance teams.
  • Proven leadership skills, including managing multiple engagement teams, mentoring staff, and building client relationships.
  • CPA certification required; additional credentials like CGMA or nonprofit-specific certifications are a plus.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Aprio

1

Highlight your specific experience with Single Audits and Uniform Guidance in your resumeโ€”quantify the number of engagements led and the size of nonprofit clients.

2

Research Aprio's recent growth and acquisitions, and mention how your background aligns with their expanding nonprofit practice.

3

Emphasize your ability to serve as a trusted advisor to boards and finance teams, providing examples of how you've helped clients navigate compliance changes.

4

Showcase any experience with nonprofit-specific software (e.g., Blackbaud, Sage Intacct) or data analytics tools used in audits.

5

Connect with current Aprio employees on LinkedIn, especially those in the Assurance team, to gain insights and potentially get a referral.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

In your cover letter, focus on: (1) your deep expertise in nonprofit assurance and Single Audits, including specific examples of complex engagements you've managed; (2) your ability to lead and develop teams while managing client relationships; (3) your understanding of the nonprofit landscape and how you help organizations see around corners; and (4) why Aprio's culture and growth trajectory excite you, showing you've done your homework on the firm.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic cover letters that don't mention nonprofit assurance or Single Auditsโ€”this role requires specialized expertise, so show you understand the niche.
  • Don't neglect to quantify your experience; vague statements like 'worked with nonprofits' are less compelling than 'led 15 Single Audits for organizations with budgets up to $50M'.
  • Avoid focusing solely on technical skills; this role requires strong client relationship management and team leadership, so highlight those soft skills with examples.
