How to Apply for Interim Chief Operations Officer

at Unknown Organization

๐Ÿข About Unknown Organization

This is a Black-led, Los Angeles-based non-profit operating at the intersection of racial justice, economic transformation, and community ownership, with national partners backing their affordable housing and community economic development work. The organization is small, distributed, and mostly remote, currently in a period of growth and transition with several permanent leadership hires underway. It offers a rare chance to shape the operational backbone of a mission-driven organization during a pivotal moment.

About This Role

As Interim COO, you will hold full day-to-day operational authority from October through December 2026, overseeing the entire team and ensuring priority work continues while the CEO travels extensively. This is a hands-on executive role where you will make decisions, establish accountability, and drive execution without unnecessarily escalating routine matters. You will partner closely with the CEO on strategy while independently managing operations, personnel, and financial management.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start your day with a quick check-in with the CEO to align on strategic priorities, then lead a team meeting to ensure projects are on track and address any blockers. Later, you'll review financial reports, make decisions on operational matters, and coach a staff member on accountability, all while keeping the CEO informed through a brief written update. The pace is fast, and you're the go-to person for the team when the CEO is unavailable.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Unknown Organization Is Looking For

  • Proven senior operational leader with experience as a COO, Deputy Director, or VP of Operations, ideally in a non-profit or mission-driven organization.
  • Skilled at stepping into a growing, distributed team and quickly taking ownership of existing systems, holding others accountable, and driving priorities to completion.
  • Deeply committed to racial justice, economic transformation, and community ownership, with cultural competence in Black-led spaces and ideally familiarity with Los Angeles communities.
  • Comfortable making independent decisions and exercising authority across operations, personnel, and financial management while keeping the CEO informed through regular strategic check-ins.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Unknown Organization

1

Highlight specific examples of times you stepped into an interim or transitional leadership role and kept operations running smoothly during a CEO's absence or organizational growth.

2

Emphasize your experience managing a distributed, remote team and your ability to enforce accountability without direct in-person oversight.

3

Demonstrate your commitment to racial justice and economic transformation by referencing past work in affordable housing, community development, or Black-led organizations.

4

Show that you understand the difference between advisory and executive authorityโ€”provide examples of decisions you made independently that drove results.

5

Address the part-time, interim nature of the role directly: explain your availability from October to December 2026 and why you're excited about a short-term, high-impact engagement.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying with a generic executive resume that doesn't highlight interim or transitional leadership experienceโ€”this role requires a proven ability to step in quickly and take charge.
  • Downplaying the part-time, interim nature of the role or expressing a desire for a permanent position, which could signal misalignment with the organization's needs.
  • Failing to demonstrate cultural competence or a genuine commitment to racial justice and community ownershipโ€”this is central to the organization's identity and work.
