How to Apply for Integration Consultant - Salesforce & Grantmaking Systems
at Sertus Partners
๐ข About Sertus Partners
Sertus Partners is a woman-owned, minority-owned Salesforce Partner and boutique consulting practice that helps nonprofits, foundations, and small businesses turn complex data into actionable insights through Salesforce, Tableau, Snowflake, and AI-enabled solutions. Unlike large consultancies, they offer direct collaboration with mission-driven clients, allowing you to see the tangible impact of your work on causes you care about. This is an ideal environment for someone who values autonomy, flexibility, and purpose-driven technology.
About This Role
As an Integration Consultant, you'll own the full lifecycle of custom integrations between Salesforce and grantmaking or other third-party systems for nonprofit and foundation clients. This includes refining requirements, validating API capabilities, designing the solution, building and testing the integration, documenting it, and demonstrating the finished product to clients. Your work will directly enable organizations to streamline grantmaking, measure impact, and operate more efficiently.
๐ก A Day in the Life
Your day might start with a client call to refine integration requirements, followed by hands-on work in Salesforce and the external system's API to test endpoints and map data fields. Afternoons could involve building and testing the integration, documenting the solution, and preparing for a demonstration to the client. As a remote 1099 consultant, you'll manage your own schedule, balancing multiple client needs and ensuring timely delivery.
๐ Application Tools
๐ฏ Who Sertus Partners Is Looking For
- Proven experience delivering production Salesforce integrations with external systems, ideally in grantmaking, nonprofit, or philanthropic contexts.
- Comfortable assessing unfamiliar APIs, determining their capabilities and limitations, and designing robust solutions across different data models and authentication methods.
- Able to work independently as a 1099 consultant, managing your own schedule and communicating effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Strong documentation and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences and demonstrate solutions confidently.
๐ Tips for Applying to Sertus Partners
Highlight specific Salesforce integrations you've built, especially those involving grantmaking systems like Blackbaud, Fluxx, Submittable, or custom APIsโinclude the business outcome and technical details.
Emphasize your ability to work directly with clients and own an integration workstream end-to-end, as Sertus Partners is a small practice where autonomy is key.
Mention any experience with nonprofit or foundation data models (e.g., grants, donations, program metrics) to show you understand the domain.
Since this is a 1099 contract, briefly note your availability, time zone, and any previous contract or freelance experience to reassure them you can hit the ground running.
Show familiarity with Sertus Partners' tech stack (Salesforce, Tableau, Snowflake, AI) and how integrations fit into that ecosystemโthis demonstrates you've done your homework.
โ๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
["Your hands-on experience with Salesforce integrations, particularly with grantmaking or third-party systems, and the specific tools and APIs you've used.", 'A concrete example of an integration project you led from requirements gathering through client demonstration, highlighting challenges and how you overcame them.', 'Your ability to work independently and adapt to different client environments, especially in a 1099 capacity.', "Why you're drawn to Sertus Partners' mission and their focus on nonprofits and philanthropic organizations, and how you align with their values."]
Generate Cover Letter โ๐ Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- โ Explore Sertus Partners' website and LinkedIn to understand their service offerings, client base, and recent projects or case studies.
- โ Research common grantmaking systems (e.g., Blackbaud Grantmaking, Fluxx, Submittable, SmartSimple) and their APIs to familiarize yourself with potential integration targets.
- โ Look into Salesforce's integration patterns and tools (MuleSoft, REST/SOAP APIs, Platform Events) and be prepared to discuss best practices.
- โ Understand the nonprofit and philanthropic sector's unique data needs, such as grant lifecycle, impact measurement, and donor management.
๐ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Being too generic about Salesforce experience without highlighting specific integrations with external systemsโthis role is not about admin configuration but about building complex integrations.
- Ignoring the 1099 nature of the role; failing to demonstrate comfort with independent contract work and self-management could raise concerns.
- Overlooking the nonprofit context; not showing interest or experience in mission-driven organizations may make you seem like a poor fit for their client base.
