How to Apply for Illinois Outreach & Engagement Associate

at Health Resources in Action, Inc.

๐Ÿข About Health Resources in Action, Inc.

Health Resources in Action (HRiA) is a mission-driven non-profit that prioritizes health and racial equity through policy and systems change. Working here means joining a collaborative team dedicated to reimagining public health, with a focus on underserved communities. HRiA values lived experience and community partnership, making it a unique place where your personal story can directly inform your work.

About This Role

As the Illinois Outreach & Engagement Associate, you will be the face of the Illinois Helplines for substance use and problem gambling, connecting individuals in rural and underserved communities to critical resources. Your work will involve building strategic relationships, conducting outreach events, and co-creating marketing content to increase helpline awareness. This role is impactful because youโ€™ll directly reduce barriers to care and support those in need.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual meeting with a rural coalition to coordinate an upcoming community event. Youโ€™d then spend time developing social media content for the helpline, followed by a phone call with a service provider to strengthen referral pathways. Afternoon could involve preparing a presentation for a local health fair, then reviewing outreach data to refine strategies.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Health Resources in Action, Inc. Is Looking For

  • A candidate with 3+ years of experience in community engagement, outreach, or volunteer management, ideally within substance use or problem gambling services.
  • Someone who demonstrates a deep commitment to health and racial equity, with experience working in or with rural communities.
  • A person with lived experience in substance use disorder and/or problem gambling, preferably in recovery for 2+ years, who can authentically connect with helpline users.
  • An excellent communicator who is comfortable conducting presentations, building coalitions, and developing culturally sensitive marketing materials.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Health Resources in Action, Inc.

1

Highlight any specific experience you have with Illinois-based outreach or partnerships, especially in rural counties.

2

Explicitly mention your lived experience with substance use or problem gambling if applicable, and frame it as an asset for building trust with the community.

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize community engagement metrics (e.g., number of events, partnerships formed, people reached) rather than just listing duties.

4

In your cover letter, connect your personal or professional commitment to health equity to HRiAโ€™s mission and the Illinois Helplineโ€™s goals.

5

Research the Illinois Helpline for Substance Use and Problem Gambling (including its partners like state agencies) and mention specific ways youโ€™d enhance its outreach in rural areas.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your understanding of and commitment to health and racial equity, and how that aligns with HRiAโ€™s mission.', 'Specific examples of successful community outreach or coalition-building, particularly in rural or underserved settings.', 'If applicable, your lived experience with substance use disorder or problem gambling and how it informs your approach to this work.', 'Your ideas for innovative outreach strategies to increase helpline awareness among marginalized populations.']

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Failing to address health equity or racial equity explicitly in your application or interview, as itโ€™s central to HRiAโ€™s mission.
  • Overlooking the importance of rural outreach; generic urban-focused experience wonโ€™t suffice without demonstrating adaptability.
