How to Apply for Humanitarian Communications Officer
at ACT Alliance
🏢 About ACT Alliance
ACT Alliance is the world's largest coalition of Protestant and Orthodox churches and church-related organisations, uniting 164 members across 125+ countries to create positive and sustainable change for poor and marginalised people. Working here means being part of a faith-based, locally led humanitarian network that prioritises dignity, accountability, and the highest international standards, offering a unique chance to amplify the voices of local responders and the communities they serve.
About This Role
As Humanitarian Communications Officer, you will drive the communication and visibility strategy for ACT Appeals and the Rapid Response Fund (RRF), turning complex humanitarian financing and response work into compelling digital content that showcases impact, supports fundraising, and strengthens local member visibility. You will work closely with the HOHA and RRF Managers and the Head of Communications to position ACT's humanitarian financing mechanisms as credible, effective, and locally led, ensuring transparent accountability to donors and communities.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve drafting a compelling story from a recent ACT Appeal response, coordinating with the RRF Manager to gather updates from local members, and creating social media content to highlight the impact of a rapid response fund allocation. You could also be preparing a donor report, editing a video testimonial from a community member, or joining a call with the Head of Communications to align on messaging for an upcoming campaign, all while ensuring transparency and accountability in every piece of content.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who ACT Alliance Is Looking For
- Proven experience in humanitarian or development communications, with a strong portfolio of digital content (stories, social media, videos, reports) that demonstrates impact and donor engagement.
- Deep understanding of humanitarian financing mechanisms (appeals, rapid response funds) and the ability to translate financial and programmatic data into accessible, compelling narratives.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills in English, with the ability to adapt tone for diverse audiences (donors, members, media, public) and experience working with faith-based or church-related organisations.
- Strong collaborative skills and cultural sensitivity, with a track record of working remotely with international teams and supporting local/national members to amplify their visibility.
📝 Tips for Applying to ACT Alliance
Tailor your cover letter and CV to explicitly reference ACT Alliance's humanitarian financing mechanisms (ACT Appeals and the Rapid Response Fund) and how your communications work has supported similar donor-funded humanitarian responses.
Include a portfolio or links to 2–3 digital content pieces (e.g., a story from a humanitarian response, a social media campaign, a donor-facing report) that showcase your ability to communicate impact and accountability.
Demonstrate familiarity with the humanitarian sector's codes and standards (e.g., Sphere, CHS, IASC) and how you have applied them in communications to ensure transparency and ethical storytelling.
Highlight any experience working with faith-based organisations or local/national partners, as ACT Alliance strongly values locally led response and member visibility.
In your application, explicitly address the remote nature of the role and your ability to collaborate effectively across time zones with colleagues in HQ (likely Geneva or regional hubs) and members worldwide.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your specific experience in humanitarian communications, particularly in producing content that supports fundraising and donor engagement for appeals or rapid response funds.', "How you have strengthened the visibility of local and national partners in previous roles, aligning with ACT Alliance's commitment to locally led humanitarian action.", 'Your ability to communicate complex financial and programmatic information transparently and compellingly to diverse audiences, including donors and member organisations.', "Your motivation to work within a faith-based coalition and your understanding of ACT Alliance's unique structure and values."]
