How to Apply for Health Innovation Lead

at Relief International

๐Ÿข About Relief International

Relief International is an international non-profit that partners with communities impacted by conflict, climate change, and disaster to save lives, build resilience, and promote long-term health and wellbeing. Operating across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, RI delivers Health and Nutrition, WASH, Education, and Livelihoods programming through local actors, ensuring conflict-sensitive, climate-smart, and evidence-based approaches. Working here means directly contributing to innovative, community-driven solutions in some of the world's most challenging contexts.

About This Role

As the Health Innovation Lead, you will shape and drive Relief International's global health innovation agenda within the Quality, Impact and Innovation Department. This remote, 12-month position involves identifying, testing, and scaling practical, evidence-based innovations to address pressing health and health-system challenges in conflict-affected and fragile settings. You will collaborate with country teams, local partners, and external stakeholders to ensure innovations are contextually appropriate, scalable, and aligned with RI's mission.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve virtual meetings with country teams to assess innovation needs, reviewing evidence and proposals for pilot projects, and collaborating with the Quality, Impact and Innovation Department to refine strategies. You could also spend time engaging with external partners, documenting lessons learned, or developing frameworks to scale successful innovations across RI's programs.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Relief International Is Looking For

  • Advanced degree in public health, health systems, innovation management, or a related field, with at least 7-10 years of experience in global health, preferably in humanitarian or development contexts.
  • Proven track record of designing, implementing, and scaling health innovations in low-resource or conflict-affected settings, including experience with digital health, community health systems, or health service delivery models.
  • Strong understanding of evidence-based programming, monitoring and evaluation, and adaptive learning, with the ability to translate evidence into actionable innovation strategies.
  • Excellent collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working with local partners, donors, and cross-functional teams in remote and multicultural environments.
  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in French, Arabic, or another language relevant to RI's countries of operation is a plus.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Relief International

1

Highlight specific examples of health innovations you have led or contributed to, emphasizing how they addressed challenges in conflict-affected or low-resource settings, as RI values practical, evidence-based solutions.

2

Demonstrate your ability to work remotely and collaboratively across time zones, as this role is remote and requires coordination with teams in various RI countries of operation within 3 hours of CET.

3

Explicitly connect your experience to RI's mission and approachโ€”mention how your work aligns with their focus on local partnerships, conflict sensitivity, and climate-smart programming.

4

If you have lived experience in or deep understanding of the contexts where RI works (Africa, Asia, Middle East), emphasize this, as RI strongly encourages applications from candidates with such backgrounds.

5

Tailor your CV and cover letter to show familiarity with RI's sectors (Health and Nutrition, WASH, Education, Livelihoods) and how innovation can integrate across them.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your vision for health innovation in humanitarian settings and how you would drive RI's global health innovation agenda forward.", 'Concrete examples of innovations you have led from ideation to scale, including challenges faced and lessons learned, particularly in conflict-affected or low-resource contexts.', 'Your approach to collaborating with local actors and ensuring innovations are culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and sustainable.', "How your background and skills align with RI's commitment to inclusivity, local partnership, and addressing health-system challenges in fragile settings."]

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
