How to Apply for Head of Programmes – Roster Various Countries
at WeWorld
🏢 About WeWorld
WeWorld is an Italian-rooted international NGO operating in 15 countries (including Italy) with over 120 emergency, humanitarian aid, and development projects, focusing on women, girls, and young people as actors of change. Its dual humanitarian-development approach and multisectoral interventions (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection) make it a dynamic place for professionals who want to work across the nexus. Working here means contributing to a fairer, more inclusive world while responding to both sudden-onset and protracted crises.
About This Role
As Head of Programmes on WeWorld's roster, you will be deployed on short notice to fill unexpected gaps in various countries, reporting directly to the Country Representative. You will oversee programme design, implementation, and quality across development and emergency settings, ensuring multisectoral projects (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection) are delivered effectively. This role is impactful because you will provide immediate leadership in critical moments, ensuring continuity for communities affected by crises.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve coordinating with sector leads to ensure timely implementation of activities, reviewing budgets and donor reports, and representing WeWorld in coordination meetings with UN agencies and local partners. You might also spend time mentoring national staff, troubleshooting operational challenges, and adapting programme strategies to evolving contexts. Given the roster nature, each day could be in a different country, but always focused on delivering quality programmes for affected populations.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who WeWorld Is Looking For
- Extensive experience (typically 7+ years) in programme management in both development and emergency contexts, with a proven track record of managing multisectoral interventions (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection).
- Demonstrated ability to deploy rapidly to diverse contexts, sometimes on short notice, and adapt to new teams and cultures while maintaining programme quality and donor compliance.
- Strong leadership and capacity-building skills, with experience supervising and mentoring programme staff in complex, insecure, or remote environments.
- In-depth knowledge of humanitarian standards (Sphere, CHS, IASC guidelines) and donor regulations (ECHO, UN agencies, etc.), plus fluency in English (Italian or French/Spanish/Arabic a plus).
- Willingness to be part of a roster and available for short-term assignments (typically 3-6 months) in various countries where WeWorld operates.
📝 Tips for Applying to WeWorld
Explicitly state your availability for short-notice deployments and willingness to be part of a roster; include your earliest start date and any constraints.
Highlight experience in multiple countries and sectors, emphasizing adaptability to different contexts (e.g., natural disasters, conflict, protracted crises).
Quantify your programme management achievements: budget sizes, number of staff managed, donor portfolios, and impact metrics.
Tailor your CV to show familiarity with WeWorld's priority sectors (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection) and its focus on women, girls, and youth.
Mention any experience with Italian cooperation or European donors, as WeWorld is an Italian NGO and often works with Italian and EU funding.

Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not explicitly stating availability for short-notice deployments or roster-based work; this is a key requirement and vagueness will hurt your application.
- Focusing only on development or only on emergency experience; WeWorld seeks candidates with strong experience in both settings.
- Ignoring WeWorld's specific focus on women, girls, and youth; failing to mention how you integrate gender and inclusion in programme management.
- Submitting a generic CV/cover letter that doesn't highlight multisectoral experience or adaptability to different countries and cultures.
