How to Apply for Executive Director (US-Based)
at Rooted Wisdom Africa, Into Your Hands Africa
🏢 About Rooted Wisdom Africa, Into Your Hands Africa
Rooted Wisdom Africa (RWA) is a dynamic nonprofit empowering children and families in rural Uganda through community-driven education and entrepreneurship, with four core initiatives: Life Skills, Women’s Enterprise Training, Collegiate Education Training, and Seeding Success. What makes RWA unique is its holistic, locally led approach—combining youth scholarships, business training for women, vocational education, and sustainable agriculture to create lasting economic independence. Working here means directly contributing to a resilient generation of self-sufficient Ugandan leaders while operating from a remote US base with meaningful international travel.
About This Role
As Executive Director, you will be the strategic leader and primary catalyst for RWA’s growth and sustainability, dedicating about 65% of your time to US revenue generation—growing and diversifying donor support, cultivating major donors, securing foundation grants, and building strategic partnerships. You will report directly to the Board of Directors and delegate day-to-day field operations to in-country staff, ensuring that RWA’s four initiatives thrive while you focus on scaling impact and financial resilience. This role is impactful because you directly enable Ugandan communities to rise above poverty through education and entrepreneurship, turning donor generosity into sustainable local transformation.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might start with a virtual meeting with the Board Chair to discuss a major donor strategy, followed by drafting a grant proposal for a foundation focused on education in East Africa. In the afternoon, you might have a call with RWA’s Uganda-based program managers to review quarterly outcomes, then end the day with a cultivation call with a prospective Colorado-based donor. Periodic travel could mean visiting Uganda to meet with community leaders and see the initiatives firsthand, or attending a US conference to network with potential partners.

📝 Tips for Applying to Rooted Wisdom Africa, Into Your Hands Africa
Quantify your fundraising achievements in your resume and cover letter—specify amounts raised, donor retention rates, and grants secured, as RWA seeks a revenue-generation expert for 65% of the role.
Explicitly state your US work authorization and, if applicable, your Colorado residency, since these are hard requirements and preferences that screen out candidates early.
Research RWA’s four initiatives (Life Skills, Women’s Enterprise Training, Collegiate Education Training, Seeding Success) and mention how your fundraising strategy would support each, showing you understand their holistic model.
Address your ability to delegate field operations to in-country staff and your experience managing remote teams across time zones, as the ED must focus on US revenue while trusting local implementation.
If you have any connection to Uganda, East Africa, or international development, highlight it—demonstrating cultural fluency and a genuine commitment to locally led change will set you apart.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
Emphasize your successful track record in major donor cultivation and foundation grants, specifically how you’ve grown revenue for international nonprofits. Articulate your strategic vision for RWA’s next phase of growth, including how you would diversify funding across individuals, foundations, and partnerships. Show your understanding of RWA’s community-driven model and your commitment to empowering Ugandan leaders, not imposing external solutions. Finally, clarify your US-based remote work setup, Colorado preference if applicable, and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
