How to Apply for Executive Director / Head of U.S. Operations - Friends of The Buddha Fellows

at Equal Innovation

🏢 About Equal Innovation

Friends of Buddha Fellows is the U.S.-based philanthropic arm of the Buddha Fellowship, a unique nonprofit that tackles rural poverty in India by backing early-stage entrepreneurs in underserved communities. What sets it apart is its dual focus on scalable venture creation and livelihood generation—51 fellows have already created 137 jobs across 8 Indian states. Working here means directly bridging U.S. philanthropic capital with on-the-ground impact in India, offering a rare blend of strategic fundraising and international development.

About This Role

As Executive Director / Head of U.S. Operations, you will be the chief architect of the U.S. strategy, responsible for mobilizing philanthropic capital, forging institutional partnerships, and elevating the organization's global profile. You'll lead a lean U.S. office, working closely with the India-based Buddha Fellowship team to ensure alignment and sustainable growth. This is a high-impact leadership role where your fundraising and partnership skills will directly fuel job creation and poverty alleviation in rural India.

💡 A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a call with the India-based team to align on priorities, followed by a strategy session with a potential foundation partner. In the afternoon, you'll review a major donor proposal, then hop on a call with a board member to discuss a cultivation event. You'll end by mentoring a junior staffer on donor research, all while keeping an eye on the U.S. office's budget and compliance tasks.

🎯 Who Equal Innovation Is Looking For

  • Proven fundraising leader: You have a track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts from foundations, high-net-worth individuals, or corporations, ideally for international development or India-focused causes.
  • Nonprofit operations expert: You've managed budgets, compliance, and remote teams, and you're comfortable wearing multiple hats in a small, entrepreneurial U.S. office.
  • Cross-cultural bridge-builder: You understand the nuances of U.S.-India philanthropic partnerships and can navigate cultural differences to build trust with both donors and the India-based team.
  • Strategic storyteller: You can translate the Buddha Fellowship's complex, grassroots impact into compelling narratives that resonate with U.S. donors and partners.

📝 Tips for Applying to Equal Innovation

1

Quantify your fundraising success in the first bullet of your resume—e.g., 'Raised $2.5M from 15 foundations in 2 years'—because this role is metrics-driven.

2

Highlight any experience with India or emerging markets, even if it's volunteer work or academic study, to show cultural fluency.

3

In your cover letter, explicitly mention the Buddha Fellowship's model (51 fellows, 137 jobs) and explain why you believe it's scalable—this shows you've done deep research.

4

Connect your network: if you have existing relationships with foundations or donors interested in India, mention them (without name-dropping) as potential leads.

5

Address the remote nature head-on: describe how you've successfully led remote teams and maintained strong communication across time zones.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

Focus on: (1) Your specific fundraising achievements and how they translate to scaling the Buddha Fellowship's U.S. donor base. (2) Your ability to build and nurture institutional partnerships, especially with entities that have an India focus. (3) Your understanding of the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem in India and why the Buddha Fellowship's model stands out. (4) Your leadership philosophy for a small, remote U.S. office that must collaborate closely with a team in India.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Generic mission statements: Don't just say you're passionate about poverty alleviation—show you understand the Buddha Fellowship's unique entrepreneur-first model.
  • Ignoring the U.S.-India dynamic: Failing to acknowledge the cross-cultural collaboration required will signal a lack of fit.
  • Underestimating the fundraising challenge: This role requires proactive donor cultivation; don't imply you'll just 'manage' existing donors without a plan to expand.
