How to Apply for ESS Delivery Project Manager - UK

at Sungrow

๐Ÿข About Sungrow

Sungrow is a global leader in solar inverters and energy storage systems, with over 405 GW installed worldwide. Joining Sungrow means being part of a company that is at the forefront of the clean energy transition, offering cutting-edge technology and a commitment to innovation. Working in the UK branch, you'll have the opportunity to influence the rapidly growing BESS market in one of Europe's most dynamic renewable energy landscapes.

About This Role

As the ESS Delivery Project Manager, you will own the end-to-end delivery of utility-scale and C&I BESS projects across the UK, from kick-off to handover. Your role is critical in ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, directly impacting the UK's energy storage capacity and grid stability. You'll be the linchpin between clients, EPCs, and internal teams, making this a high-visibility, high-impact position.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day starts with a review of project schedules and risk registers for 2-3 active BESS projects, followed by a call with an EPC contractor to address a commissioning delay. Mid-morning, you join a cross-functional meeting with engineering and procurement to align on equipment delivery timelines. After lunch, you present a project status update to the client and investor, then spend the afternoon updating project plans and preparing for a site visit the next day.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Sungrow Is Looking For

  • An electrical engineer with 3-5 years of project management experience specifically in BESS, solar PV, or renewable energy, with a proven track record of delivering utility-scale projects.
  • Deep technical understanding of BESS components (PCS, BMS) and grid connection requirements, enabling you to confidently lead technical discussions and resolve issues.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment, using tools like MS Project or Primavera to maintain detailed schedules and risk registers.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with experience acting as the primary point of contact for clients, EPCs, and investors, ensuring alignment and clear communication.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Sungrow

1

Tailor your CV to highlight specific BESS project experience, including project sizes (MW/MWh), technologies used (e.g., lithium-ion, PCS vendors), and your role in the full lifecycle.

2

Quantify your achievements: e.g., 'Delivered a 50MW/100MWh BESS project on time and under budget by 5%'.

3

Research Sungrow's product portfolio (e.g., SG250HX inverter, ST2752UX storage system) and mention how your technical knowledge aligns with their solutions.

4

In your cover letter, explicitly address the 'utility-scale and C&I' project scope and your experience with both segments.

5

Prepare to discuss a specific project risk you managed and how you mitigated itโ€”this demonstrates the risk register skill mentioned in the job description.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your hands-on experience with BESS project delivery, including specific examples of managing scope, schedule, budget, and quality.', 'Highlight your technical understanding of BESS architecture, grid code compliance, and commissioning processes in the UK.', 'Showcase your ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and external contractors, with examples of successful stakeholder management.', "Express enthusiasm for Sungrow's market position and your desire to contribute to the UK's energy storage growth."]

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Review Sungrow's latest BESS product launches and case studies, especially for UK projects (e.g., the 100MW/200MWh project in Scotland).
  • โ†’ Understand the UK's energy storage regulatory framework, including DNO/NGESO connection processes and the Capacity Market.
  • โ†’ Look into Sungrow's company culture and values, particularly their focus on innovation and sustainability.
  • โ†’ Check recent news about Sungrow's expansion in the UK and their partnerships with EPCs or developers.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through a BESS project you managed from kick-off to handoverโ€”what were the key challenges and how did you overcome them?
2 How do you ensure grid connection requirements are met for a utility-scale BESS project in the UK?
3 Describe a time you had to manage a conflict between a client and an EPC contractor. How did you resolve it?
4 What project management tools and methodologies do you use to track multiple projects simultaneously?
5 How do you stay updated on UK energy storage regulations and market trends?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic applicationโ€”failing to mention BESS-specific experience or Sungrow's products will make your application stand out for the wrong reasons.
  • Avoid being vague about your role in past projects; clearly state whether you led, coordinated, or contributed to specific tasks.
  • Don't overlook the 'C&I' aspectโ€”if you only have utility-scale experience, mention how your skills transfer to smaller commercial projects.
