How to Apply for Engineering Manager, Infrastructure (Remote, US)

at Renew Home

๐Ÿข About Renew Home

Renew Home is building the largest sustainable power plant on the grid by aggregating and optimizing distributed energy resources like smart thermostats and water heaters. This mission-driven company offers a unique chance to work on cutting-edge infrastructure that directly impacts climate change and grid resilience.

About This Role

As Engineering Manager for Infrastructure, you'll lead a team of 5-8 engineers responsible for the cloud, networking, security, CI/CD, and developer experience that powers Renew Home's virtual power plant. Your work directly enables the company to scale its impact on renewable energy integration and grid stability.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a standup with your infrastructure team to review on-call handoffs and ongoing projects, then a sync with product engineering to discuss upcoming needs. Afternoon could involve diving into a design doc for a new CI/CD pipeline, reviewing a postmortem from a recent incident, and one-on-one coaching with a team member on their career growth.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Renew Home Is Looking For

  • You have 5+ years managing infrastructure/platform/SRE/DevOps teams and have hands-on IC experience in one of those areas, so you can mentor and jump in when needed.
  • You possess deep production cloud expertise in AWS (preferred), GCP, or Azure, including networking, IAM, and cost optimization.
  • You have strong CI/CD and identity & access management experience, with a track record of building secure, automated pipelines.
  • You can set roadmap priorities under pressure, making trade-offs between reliability, security, and feature velocity, and you're comfortable saying no to stakeholders.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Renew Home

1

Highlight specific examples of how you've balanced infrastructure investment with product team needs in a fast-paced environment.

2

Demonstrate your hands-on experience with AWS by mentioning specific services (e.g., EKS, Lambda, Terraform) and how you've optimized them for scale.

3

Showcase your incident response and postmortem culture leadershipโ€”mention any SLOs you've implemented and how they improved reliability.

4

Tailor your resume to emphasize experience with CI/CD pipelines and identity/access management, as these are explicitly called out.

5

Include metrics: e.g., reduced deployment time by X%, improved uptime to Y%, or managed a team that supported Z devices.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for renewable energy and grid sustainability, and how Renew Home's mission aligns with your values.", "Concrete examples of leading infrastructure teams through growth, including how you've set priorities and managed trade-offs.", "Your hands-on cloud expertise, especially with AWS, and how you've improved CI/CD and security.", 'Your experience fostering a blameless postmortem culture and driving operational excellence through SLOs and on-call rotations.']

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Understand Renew Home's product: how they aggregate smart home devices to provide grid services. Read their blog or news articles about their virtual power plant.
  • โ†’ Research the energy industry and demand response programs to speak knowledgeably about grid challenges.
  • โ†’ Look into the company's engineering blog or open source contributions to understand their tech stack and engineering culture.
  • โ†’ Check their careers page and LinkedIn for recent team growth or announcements to show you're up-to-date.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you prioritize between a new feature requested by product engineering and a critical security upgrade? Walk us through your decision-making process.
2 Describe a time you had to say no to a stakeholder. How did you handle it and what was the outcome?
3 What is your experience with incident response and postmortems? Can you give an example of a postmortem that led to a meaningful change?
4 How would you design a CI/CD pipeline for a microservices architecture that needs to deploy to multiple cloud regions?
5 Tell us about a time you improved developer experience (e.g., reducing deployment friction or improving observability).

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus solely on technical details without showing leadership and prioritization skillsโ€”this is a management role.
  • Avoid being vague about cloud experience; be specific about AWS services and scale.
  • Don't neglect the missionโ€”if you don't show genuine interest in sustainability, you'll seem misaligned with the company's core values.
