at NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER®
🏢 About NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER®
The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) is a leading nonprofit dedicated to advancing economic justice for low-income households through legal expertise and policy advocacy. Working here means joining a mission-driven team that shapes consumer protection laws and utilities policy to ensure affordable, equitable access to essential services. NCLC’s remote-first culture and focus on systemic change offer a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on energy affordability.
About This Role
This role focuses on providing legal technical assistance to state advocates in the Southeast, intervening in state utility commission proceedings to lower energy burdens for low-income consumers. As an Energy and Utilities Unit Consumer Attorney, you will drive litigation strategy, build coalitions, and produce research that influences regulatory decisions. Your work will directly help vulnerable communities avoid utility shutoffs and reduce energy costs.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve reviewing a utility commission filing from a partner organization in Mississippi, drafting comments on a proposed rate increase, and then joining a virtual coalition meeting to align on advocacy strategies. Later, you might prepare a training on energy burden data for legal aid attorneys or write a blog post on a recent regulatory decision affecting low-income customers.
