How to Apply for Director, Data & Integration Services

at The Environmental Defense Fund

๐Ÿข About The Environmental Defense Fund

The Environmental Defense Fund is a global nonprofit that uses science, economics, and market-based solutions to tackle climate change, restore oceans, and protect human health. What sets EDF apart is its pragmatic, nonpartisan approachโ€”partnering with businesses, governments, and communities to create lasting environmental impact. Working here means applying cutting-edge technology to one of the most urgent missions of our time.

About This Role

As Director of Data & Integration Services, you'll be the strategic and technical leader for EDF's enterprise data ecosystem, centered on Snowflake and integrated with Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday, and a suite of MarTech tools. You'll define the vision for data, analytics, and integration while driving a modernization roadmap toward a cloud-native, hub-and-spoke architecture using dbt, Fivetran, Informatica IICS, APIs, and event-driven patterns. This role is pivotal in reducing technical debt, improving data quality, and enabling data-driven decision-making across Finance, Marketing, Fundraising, HR, and CRM.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a leadership stand-up to align on data priorities, followed by a deep-dive with the integration team on an API or event-driven pipeline. You could then meet with Finance to discuss analytics needs for fundraising, and later review a dbt model with engineers to ensure data quality. You'll balance strategic roadmap planning with hands-on problem-solving, always keeping EDF's mission at the forefront.

๐ŸŽฏ Who The Environmental Defense Fund Is Looking For

  • Proven experience leading enterprise data and integration strategy in a complex, multi-application environment (e.g., Snowflake, Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday).
  • Hands-on technical depth in modern data stack tools: dbt, Fivetran, Informatica IICS, Snowpipe, APIs, and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Track record of driving DataOps, CI/CD, data observability, and governance in a cloud-native architecture.
  • Strong ability to partner with business executives and IT leaders, translating business needs into scalable data solutions.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to The Environmental Defense Fund

1

Include a cover letter that explicitly connects your data leadership experience to EDF's missionโ€”show how you've used data to drive social or environmental impact.

2

Highlight specific projects where you modernized a legacy data ecosystem, mentioning tools like Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, or Informatica IICS.

3

Demonstrate experience with hub-and-spoke architecture and event-driven integrations, as EDF is actively evolving toward this model.

4

Quantify results: e.g., 'reduced data latency by X%' or 'improved data quality across Y systems' to show tangible impact.

5

Mention any experience with nonprofit or mission-driven organizations, or explain why you're motivated to apply your skills in the environmental sector.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your vision for a modern, cloud-native data architecture and how it aligns with EDF's hub-and-spoke evolution.", 'Concrete examples of leading data integration across Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday, and MarTech tools.', 'Your approach to balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical support, as the role requires both.', "How you've fostered data governance, DataOps, and observability to improve data trust and reduce technical debt."]

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ EDF's climate, oceans, and health programs, and how data might support their goalsโ€”look for recent reports or data-driven initiatives.
  • โ†’ EDF's technology stack: research Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, Informatica IICS, and how they might be used in a nonprofit context.
  • โ†’ EDF's organizational structure and key business functions (Finance, Marketing, Fundraising, HR, CRM) to understand stakeholder needs.
  • โ†’ Recent news about EDF's digital transformation or IT leadership changes to tailor your questions and cover letter.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you assess EDF's current data ecosystem and prioritize modernization initiatives?
2 Describe a time you led a migration to Snowflake or implemented dbt/Fivetran at scaleโ€”what challenges did you face?
3 How do you ensure data quality and governance across disparate systems like Salesforce, NetSuite, and Workday?
4 What strategies have you used to build partnerships with business executives and align data strategy with organizational goals?
5 How would you approach reducing technical debt while simultaneously delivering new analytics capabilities?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on technical skills without demonstrating strategic vision or business acumenโ€”this is a director-level role.
  • Ignoring the nonprofit context: not showing passion for EDF's mission or understanding of resource constraints in a nonprofit.
  • Submitting a generic cover letter that doesn't address EDF's specific data modernization journey or tools like Snowflake and dbt.
