How to Apply for Development Director

at RESOLVE: The National Infertility and Family Building Association

🏢 About RESOLVE: The National Infertility and Family Building Association

RESOLVE is the leading national patient advocacy organization for the 1 in 6 Americans facing infertility, trusted for its community support, education, and advocacy. Working here means contributing to a mission that directly impacts millions of people on their family-building journey, with a dedicated and passionate team.

About This Role

As Development Director, you will lead a $3M+ fundraising program across corporate partnerships, foundations, major gifts, and events. This role is critical to sustaining and growing RESOLVE's impact, and you'll have the opportunity to build and mentor a team while shaping the organization's fundraising strategy alongside the CEO.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with your development team to review progress on corporate partnership renewals or major gift moves. You'll likely meet with the CEO to strategize on a six-figure solicitation, then draft SOPs for donor stewardship. Afternoon could involve a virtual meeting with a foundation program officer or a planning session for an upcoming event, followed by reviewing donor data in your CRM to identify next steps.

📝 Tips for Applying to RESOLVE: The National Infertility and Family Building Association

1

1. Tailor your resume to highlight specific six-figure gifts and multi-million dollar portfolio achievements, with clear metrics (e.g., 'Secured $500K corporate partnership' or 'Grew major gifts portfolio by 40%').

2

2. In your cover letter, explicitly connect your fundraising experience to RESOLVE's mission—mention infertility, family building, or patient advocacy to show genuine alignment.

3

3. Prepare a one-page summary of how you would approach building the development team and documenting SOPs, as this is a key responsibility.

4

4. Research RESOLVE's current fundraising initiatives (e.g., Night of Hope events, Walk of Hope, corporate partners) and mention specific ideas for growth.

5

5. Demonstrate remote leadership experience—mention tools (e.g., Salesforce, Zoom) and strategies for managing a distributed team effectively.

6

6. Show your ability to collaborate with a CEO by providing an example of how you've served as a thought partner in a previous role.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

• Emphasize your passion for RESOLVE's mission and your understanding of the infertility community's needs. • Highlight your experience securing six-figure gifts and managing multi-million dollar portfolios, with specific examples. • Describe your team-building and leadership philosophy, especially in a remote context. • Mention your strategic approach to developing fundraising SOPs and working closely with executive leadership.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 1. Walk us through how you would build and lead a development team from scratch (including hiring, onboarding, and setting goals).
2 2. Describe a time you secured a six-figure gift—what was your strategy, and how did you steward the relationship?
3 3. How would you partner with the CEO to develop fundraising strategy and manage high-level donor relationships?
4 4. What systems and SOPs would you implement to ensure consistency across corporate, foundation, major gift, and event channels?
5 5. How do you stay current with trends in infertility and family building, and how would you leverage that knowledge in donor conversations?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • 1. Don't submit a generic fundraising cover letter—failing to mention infertility or RESOLVE's mission will seem disengaged.
  • 2. Avoid focusing solely on one fundraising channel (e.g., events) if you lack experience in corporate or major gifts, as the role requires multi-channel expertise.
  • 3. Don't overlook the remote aspect—if you can't articulate how you lead and build culture virtually, it may raise concerns.
  • 4. Don't propose unrealistic fundraising goals without understanding the current donor base and capacity.
