How to Apply for Data Analyst

at America Votes

๐Ÿข About America Votes

America Votes is the coordination hub of the progressive movement, uniting over 400 state and national partners to advance progressive policies and protect voting rights. Working here means your data skills directly support election wins and democratic participation at scale.

About This Role

As a Data Analyst, you'll build dashboards and reports that shape campaign strategy for AV and partner organizations. Your SQL-driven insights will help translate program needs into actionable decisions, ensuring resources are deployed effectively to turn out voters.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start by checking a dashboard for partner field metrics, then join a meeting with program staff to refine a data request. After writing a SQL query to analyze voter contact data, you'd create a memo summarizing key findings for the organizing team, and end the day updating a Tableau dashboard for the next morning's strategy call.

๐ŸŽฏ Who America Votes Is Looking For

  • Has at least one election cycle experience with voter files and contact data at a political campaign or progressive org
  • Strong SQL skills including complex joins, aggregate functions, and cloud data warehouse experience
  • Can turn data into clear, persuasive presentations and written memos for non-technical stakeholders
  • Experienced with dashboard creation (any platform) and staying current with analytics best practices

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to America Votes

1

Tailor your resume to highlight voter file and political campaign data work, using terms like 'voter contact data', 'targeting', and 'field metrics'

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your past analytics work to progressive outcomes (e.g., increased turnout, issue advocacy)

3

Prepare a portfolio or examples of dashboards you've built for campaigns or advocacy, even if they're from volunteer roles

4

Mention specific SQL projects where you cleaned or joined large voter datasets from multiple sources

5

Demonstrate understanding of progressive coalition dynamicsโ€”show you know how partner orgs coordinate
